Cowrie Grill of the Manila Hotel

Promenade Shopping Center Missouri Street, Greenhills, San Juan; tel. 5270011

The Grand Dame has elevated the dining experience of the community through its elegant ambiance, its haute cuisine and its impeccable service—a unique offering amid the hub of hundreds of eateries, tiangge and bargain stores. One need not go through the maze as the restaurant has an entrance away from it all, so to speak.

Dining area: A class on its own—elegant, brightly lit by bulbs that make the Cowrie shells glisten. Interiors are done in heavy mahogany shade, the wood tables are also in dark brown, the long circular sofa is done in light-beige upholstery while chairs have blue heavy-fabric-covered seats. There are private cubicles for more intimate dining, protected from the crowd by beige silk drapes. A bar is by the entrance door which is framed by more shells.

Service: This classic grill house takes pride in its tableside service, efficiently performed by the wait staff. It is a joy to see carts being wheeled in and offerings made to the guests. A dramatic demonstration of Baked Alaska gives the kilig factor of the meal.

Staff:Neat in their white long-sleeve shirts with black cravats worn over black pants/skirts. They are unobtrusive but attentive.

Suggested orders: Start with a soothing Fresh Mushroom Soup and follow it up with the crispy Caesar Salad. Signature dishes are grilled steaks, ranging from the pricey Striploin US Wagyu, Grade 8, 10 oz at P6,700 to the Roast US Angus Beef Prime Rib at P1,800. Each is served with three sauces, baked potato and greens. You may opt for Lobster Thermidor or Australian lamb cutlets. Perfect with red wine and a robust cup of coffee.

Government taxes and service charge are added to the bill. Senior cards are honored.
