5 steps to speed up your beauty regimen | Lifestyle.INQ

There is only one secret to cutting down your prep time in the morning: Get organized.

Step 1. Set an everyday tray.

We have staple cosmetics we like to use over and over again, depending on the season. Set aside all the products you use everyday— primer, concealer, BB cream, cheek tint and eyebrow liner… the mix is up to you. You may change it every other month or so, but keep this tray visible. This is your go-to corner right after you get out of the shower.

It is meant to prep your skin for a regular beauty look, like for going out for quick errands. If I feel like it, I swipe my favorite lipstick shade or dress up my eyes, and then I’m off.

The other products I don’t use regularly, I keep in drawers. It’s hygienic, and helps avoid clutter, which is such a huge eyesore in the morning.

Step 2. Keep all your brushes in one place.

You don’t have to buy a new brush container. I personally like to recycle chic product packaging, like Diptyque candleholders, clear trays and colorful printed boxes.

This step is important because, not only does it hold your tools, it also reminds you when you should clean your brushes. I keep my brush cleaner/detergent right beside my brushes for convenience.

Step 3. Categorize the rest of your products by eyes, lips and face.

I like to set aside different compartments for each category. For the eyes, separate eyeliners, eyeshadow palettes and mascara.

My lip products stay in one tray as well, with compartments for lipsticks (everyone should have at least one of those lipstick trays!), lip liners and gloss.

Face products include heavy coverage foundation (which I use only for special occasions), highlighters, bronzers, primers, BB creams and CC creams, and a variety of blushes.

I personally prefer if the compartments are not clear, with lids or closed drawers, so the area looks even more uncluttered.

Step 4. Keep a tissue box and water container nearby.

You don’t have to keep going back and forth to your powder room. Keep tissue, facial wipes and cotton swabs within arm’s reach, plus a small water container so you can wet your brushes for those steps where you need more product control, like contouring the eyes.

This special corner will also help you clean up the mess, both on your face (when you smudge makeup or make mistakes) and on your vanity (makeup spills). You may also want to set a small trash bin especially for your beauty regimens.

Step 5. Ditch your makeup when it has reached its shelf life.

Mascara is crucial because it expires the fastest, after only three to four months. Don’t be stubborn—if you keep it longer, you will be more prone to eye infection, irritation and acne. The skin around the eyes are especially sensitive, so don’t risk it!

A water-based foundation will last up to one year, and oil-based products will last up to a year and a half.

Eyeshadow, eyeliner and lipliner will last up to three years. Lipstick lasts up to two years, but here’s an extra tip: If you keep lipstick in the fridge, it will last longer.

The easiest thing to remember though is that, if the beauty product changes in consistency, color and smell, ditch it immediately.
