The Inquirer is guided by the principle of respect for personal autonomy, including the choice of one’s gender or sexual orientation. The Associated Press Stylebook, for instance, prescribes the use of the pronoun “preferred by the individuals who have acquired the physical characteristics of the opposite sex or present themselves in a way that does not correspond with their sex at birth.” Accordingly, in reporting the killing of Jeffrey “Jennifer” Laude, the Inquirer will use the feminine pronoun in acknowledgment of her choice.
