Nailing your school spirit | Lifestyle.INQ

OCTOBER 27, 2022

College basketball in UAAP Season 77 may have ended but expression of school fandom goes on in a unique way through nail art.

Since the tournament competitions will still be fought in the second semester—juniors basketball and seniors volleyball, to name a few—one can still flaunt school pride after a visit to the nail spa.

UST Tigers stripes

Go for tiger stripes-inspired nails if you support the University of Santo Tomas and show off your nails as you clap and wave during a game. This nail art is relatively easy to do and does not require much painting precision.

Base and top coat

Yellow and orange nail polish

Makeup sponge

Cotton buds

Detail nail art brush

Nail polish remover

Black acrylic paint

Steps:

1.
POLISH your nails with a yellow color and let dry. Apply base coat to protect your natural nails.
2.
APPLY yellow and orange nail polish on an extra makeup sponge.
3.
DAB THE sponge on your nails to create a gradient effect until desired effect is met.
4.
CLEAN polish around the nails with cotton buds soaked with nail polish remover.
5.
PAINT tiger stripes using black acrylic paint and a detail nail art brush. (Tip: Search for tiger stripes images to use as guide.)
6.
SEAL your design with a top coat.

Optional: Apply a top coat  before painting the tiger stripes to make painting more manageable. This will also create a protective layer if you make a mistake while painting the design. You can easily wipe the paint with water or alcohol.

Ateneo color

This nail art is inspired by the Ateneo color and the basketball uniform. Not only will you be supporting the Blue Eagles, you will also be wearing the jersey numbers of your favorite players!

Cotton buds

Striper nail art brush

Magic or Scotch tape

White acrylic paint

Steps:

1.
APPLY a base coat and allow to completely dry. Then cut a triangle shape on a Magic or Scotch tape and stick one corner near the cuticle area. Make sure that the tape is pressed firmly on all edges.

2.
POLISH your nails with a blue color.

3.
CAREFULLY remove the tape while polish is still wet.

4.
DRAW a thin white line to define the collar of the jersey using acrylic paint and a striper nail art brush.

5.
GET YOUR date rubber stamper and set it to the number of  your favorite basketball player from your school. Once set, paint the number with a thin layer of white acrylic paint. (Tip: Do not use too much paint because it will smudge as you press the stamp on your nails.)

6.
GENTLY and firmly stamp the number on your nail for three seconds. Allow to dry completely.

7.
SEAL the design with a top coat.

Optional: If you don’t have a date rubber stamper, you can just wear the manicure as a  blank jersey or you may ask someone to paint the numbers for you.
