MANILA, Philippines – “Mirror, mirror on the wall, who’s the sexiest vegetarian of them all?”

The answer may be known in late November when netizens vote up until November 25 when the People for Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) announce the winners on PETAAsiaPacific.com.

Among Asia’s contenders are FHM cover girls Amanda Griffin Jacob and Geneva Cruz, model Sandra Seifert, and Binibining Pilipinas winner Mary Jean Lastimosa.

Other contenders from the Philippines include musicians Lougee Basabas and Nityalila Saulo and actors Chin Chin Gutierrez and Maricel Laxa-Pangilinan. The contest coincides with World Vegan Month, which is celebrated each November.

Additional nominees include former US President Bill Clinton, musicians Jason Mraz and Paul McCartney, talk-show host Ellen DeGeneres, and actors Natalie Portman, Tobey Maguire, and Jared Leto.

Why are more and more trendsetters choosing to go meat-free? Healthy vegetarian meals can help reduce the risk of suffering from heart disease, cancer, and strokes. Plus, meat-eaters are nine times more likely to be obese than vegans are, making a vegetarian diet one of the easiest ways to stay slim and sexy, according to research.

“When I was eating meat, I had a lot of digestive issues,” says Jacob, who went vegetarian in 2007. “Now that I’m vegetarian, I feel wonderful both mentally and physically. Most importantly, I know I’m giving my children the best possible start in life.”

Her advice to wannabe vegetarians? “Do it. Your mind and body will thank you for it.”

“When you look at the gorgeous celebrities in this year’s contest, it’s clear that eating vegetarian meals helps keep you beautiful inside and out,” says PETA Asia Vice President of International Operations Jason Baker. “Going vegetarian is the best thing that you can do for animals, the Earth, and yourself. Plus, everyone knows that there’s nothing sexier than someone who exudes both passion and compassion.”

PETA will decide the winners—one male and one female—based on several factors, including the number of votes received.
