“You have to be passionate about the job—you are the liaison between the company and the designer,” says Romero Jennings, MAC’s director for makeup artistry. “As an artist, it’s important to have skills, but it’s more important to have passion.”

He has created fun looks not only for celebrities such as Mary J. Blige, Toni Colette, Naomi Campbell, and Fran Drescher, but also for Broadway plays, music videos, magazines like Vogue and Vibe, and fashion shows in New York and Milan.

His enthusiasm proved quite infectious during the MAC trends presentation at Shangri-La Boracay, as editors and writers hung on to his every word while he showcased MAC’s Spring-Summer 2015 trends: “Re:View,” “Enlightened,” “Free Party” and “No Makeup.”

These products and procedures should let you create that perfect selfie.

“Re:View” is about framing the eye but it’s done in this interesting painterly way, while “Enlightened” is all about giving your face that instant highlight without making it look greasy. By finding a balance between matte and glossy finishes, you’re able to create a modern look. Use the Prep+Prime Fix, which gives the skin a fresh and pumped glow.

If you would rather go for some color and give off that Coachella vibe, “Free Party” should do the trick. It’s about blending colors seamlessly, “without lines and boundaries.” Try hues like aqua, sea-foam green, coral and shell pink.

For an easy everyday look (on the outside, that is), “No Makeup” is about making your face look like there’s nothing there but skin. It actually takes longer to do as you’re tasked to enhance certain parts of your face while still pulling off that natural look. A hydrated finish, minimal powder, groomed brows, sheer highlights, and most especially, the right amount of concealer are the key elements of this look.

For concealer, there’s Matchmaster, which utilizes breakthrough pigment technology to create a subtle finish that suits your skin. The concealer reduces the appearance of under eye circles, dark spots, discolorations, fine lines, and wrinkles.

“All the looks had the same skin as we’re doing this type of spa-treatment look,” explains Jennings. “We’re taking the time to do these steps backstage  when we didn’t before. It’s those really subtle details that make the difference in the skin looking really radiant by treating the skin.”

As every look should first have a good base, on this spread, learn Romero’s steps in applying foundation and his favorite tools.

STEP-BY-STEP GUIDE TO APPLYING FOUNDATION

  1. Freshen the face with Fix Plus.

  1. First prep the face with the Marine Bright Formula Softening Lotion using a cotton pad.

  1. Apply the Mineralize Charged Water Moisturize Gel with the #108 brush in a tapping and swirling motion.

  1. Apply the Prep+Prime Skin Refined Zone Treatment on your T-zone (use a tapping motion with the #109 brush).

  1. Apply the Pro Longwear Foundation with the #109 brush in a tapping motion for coverage where needed. Pro Longwear SPF 20 Compact Foundation also provides the same 10-hour wear of Pro Longwear Foundation. It has a natural matte finish and provides sheer to medium coverage, while keeping skin fresh and free to breathe.

  1. Add coverage by stippling or tapping over existing coverage

  1. Powder if necessary. Use the Careblend powder for a flawless matte finish ready for the red carpet or the everyday #selfie. NOTE: If you’re acidic, you can match foundation color to your skin tone but when it comes to face powder, go two shades lighter. If you go for foundation and powder in the same color as your skin tone, chances are your face will look too dark after one or two hours of application.
