Many people usually enroll in sports clinics for the summer break. But, with a vibrant local theater scene, why not invest in your creative self by signing up in a summer theater course? We’ve listed down some of the workshops worth checking out.

9 Works Theatrical

9 Works Theatrical is holding Stage Camp 2015, which began on April 6 and runs until May 24.

Fresh from its recent hit production of “La Cage aux Folles,” 9 Works is offering seven-week, age-specific programs at The Loft of The Rockwell Club, Rockwell Center, Makati City. The company can accommodate newcomers until the second weekend, so you better hurry.

Fee is P9,000 but members of The Rockwell Club get P500 off. Classes include the Kiddie and Pre-Teen Camp for kids from ages 5-11 (1-3 p.m.); Teen Camp for youngsters from ages 12-17 (4-6 p.m.); and Adult Camp for those 18 years old and above (7-9 p.m.).

The programs will culminate in weekend performances on May 23-24.

Gantimpala Theater Foundation

Gantimpala Theater Foundation is offering summer workshops for theater actors and stage managers.

Kicking off its 38th season in its new home, the AFP Theater, the group will begin its musical theater courses on April 13. The courses will run through May 13, with classes Mondays to Thursdays, 1-5 p.m.

For P6,000, enrollees—teens and adults (13 years and above)—will go through lessons in acting, singing, dancing, techniques and professional practices.

The company will also hold a two-week workshop for stage managers in May, dates to be announced.

Industry experts facilitate the actors’ workshop. They are actor-director Roeder Camañag; and director, librettist and costume/set designer Jose Jeffrey Camañag. The stage management workshop will be under Ed Murillo.

Kids Acts Philippines

Kids Acts Philippines, a nonprofit theater company that stages youth and children’s plays, invites parents to enlist their kids in its summer workshop, TheCampArt.

The P15,000 package of 20 sessions consists of voice, piano, guitar and music-theory lessons for ages 4 and above. These one-on-one sessions began last April 6 and will run until May 30.

Venue is TheCampArt Studio at Unit 209, Cityland, Pasong Tamo, Makati City.

Other courses—a musical theater workshop and a hip hop and street dance workshop—were closed to new enrollees on Friday.

The musical theater workshop’s recital piece will be “Beauty and the Beast.”

Peta

Intensive classes dot the summer for the Philippine Educational Theater Association (Peta). The institution says its theater courses, ranging from basic to advanced, are geared toward “allowing students to fully express themselves and shine under the limelight of a legitimate stage.”

The courses include the Basic Integrated Theater Arts Workshop or Bitaw process which combines group dynamics, creative dance, creative music, visual arts and creative writing.

Peta offers courses for children as young as 6 (6-8 and 9-12) and teens until age 16 (13-16). These classes delve into creative writing, visual arts and improvisation. Kids’ classes include games, while the teens use new media.

Most courses are worth P11,000 and run from May 4. Another 15-session course for teens is P9,000.

For newbies 17 and older, Peta offers a curriculum exploring theater production and history beginning May 4. For the same age group, the company has also opened a P9,000 workshop on the elements of theater. It begins on April 20.

The programs will be held at the Peta Theater Center in New Manila, Quezon City, and the Meridian International College in Taguig City.

Repertory Philippines

Repertory Philippines, the theater company specializing in English productions, will offer a theater master class under director Jaime del Mundo, whose extensive credits include the 2013 musical hit “The Bluebird of Happiness.”

The program, preferably for people with basic training in theater, is worth P8,000 and scheduled on weekdays of May 4-31, 6-9 p.m.  Venue is Citrus Snap Studio, Makati City.

For the same price, adults can join Rep’s annual summer workshop, scheduled 6-9 p.m., April 13-May 31.

Enrollment was closed on April 10 for the workshops targeting teens, pre-teens and kids.

Venue is Active Fun in Bonifacio Global City. All the classes will culminate in a theater production.

Tanghalang Pilipino

If you want to know what happens behind the curtains, this course is for you.

Tanghalang Pilipino’s Summer Theater Adventure 2015 is open until Tuesday for the Production and Stage Management course, one of six classes offered by the resident drama company of the Cultural Center of the Philippines.

The intensive course at P10,000 is supervised by stage manager Ed Murillo. It began on April 7 and runs Tuesdays-Saturdays of the month.

Other courses—Children’s Theater 1 and 2, Beginning Acting, Musical Theater for Teens and Rehearsals to Performance Technique—closed on Friday.

Trumpets

Trumpets Playshop offers summer classes for five age groups.

Kids ages 4-6, 7-9 and 10-12, as well as teens and adults can choose from drama, dance, voice and multimedia lessons. There are also classes on photography and modelling for kids and animation and cartooning.

Children’s Theater and Children’s Musical already began classes on April 8.

New offerings include personality development and toddlers’ hip hop. The courses are peppered with exercises and games for kids.
