Lovatics have good reason to celebrate the coming Labor Day weekend as pop singer Demi Lovato brings her “Demi” world tour to Manila next week.

The concert is on April 30 at SM Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.

This marks Lovato’s second time to perform for her Filipino fans; the first was in 2013. “I had an amazing time! The crowd had such a great energy and I’m really excited to head back,” the “Heart Attack” singer told Inquirer Super in a recent email interview. “Performing (in Manila) is one of my favorite memories—having the opportunity to connect with fans all over the world is always a special experience.”

Vocal powerhouse

Rising to fame through Disney Channel’s “Camp Rock” movies, which she starred in opposite the Jonas Brothers, Lovato has established herself as a vocal powerhouse with her impressive range.

Her catchy singles have achieved praise from critics and nabbed spots on the Billboard charts. The most notable of these include “Skyscraper” and “Give Your Heart a Break” from the 2011 album “Unbroken,” and “Heart Attack” and “Really Don’t Care” from her eponymous fourth record.

In between touring and composing new songs for her next album, Lovato has kept herself busy with other pursuits. Apart from her stint as a judge on season 3 of the US version of reality singing tilt “The X Factor,” TV viewers last saw her in “Glee” season 5 as the sometime love interest of Naya Rivera’s character, Santana Lopez.

Then there’s her radio-friendly version of the ubiquitous “Frozen” theme song “Let It Go,” which was used as the promotional single for the film’s soundtrack.

Lovato has also engaged in charity work, launched her own skin care line, written a best-selling book, and become a staunch advocate of LGBT and anti-bullying rights, among others. But that’s not all there is to admire about the pop star.

Difficult time

At 22, Lovato has already gone through a difficult time in her life, and only a few young celebrities are brave enough to do what she did—that is, publicly opening up about her struggles with bulimia, alcoholism and substance abuse, and voluntarily undergoing treatment at a rehabilitation facility.

Now she’s emerged stronger and more confident than ever, armed with punchy pop-rock anthems with heartfelt messages of self-empowerment.

What’s the story behind your self-titled album?

“Demi” is probably my most personal album to date—I cowrote almost every song and really poured my heart into it. The album has a different feel compared to anything I’ve done in the past; I was really proud of it.

Out of all your songs, which one do you think best represents who and where you are now, both as an artist and as an individual?

“Really Don’t Care,” because it represents confidence and being comfortable in your own skin. At the moment, the message is something that really resonates with me.

You consider Kelly Clarkson one of your biggest influences. Will we ever see a collaboration between you two someday?

Yes! She’s incredible and I actually read recently that she would love to collaborate with me, so who knows? Anything is possible!

Any other artists or creative minds you want to work with in the future?

So many! I’m a huge fan of Ed Sheeran, so it would be awesome to work with him, but I also really love Sam Smith right now.

“Frozen” became such a huge hit. What was the recording process like? Would you want to be a part of the sequel?

Recording “Let It Go” and filming the music video was an incredible experience, and it was such an honor to be part of the soundtrack. Disney just announced that there will be a “Frozen 2”—I’d love to have a role in the sequel, but I’m not sure how much time I’ll have with new music coming, and my tour!

We last saw you on “Glee.” Do you have any plans of taking on more acting roles or are you focusing on music and touring for the time being?

At the moment, my priority has been creating new music and touring, but I will play the lead role in the upcoming animated film, “Charming.” Acting has always been a big part of my life and always will be!

Any other fields you’d like to venture in or other causes you’d like to support?

As I continue on my journey, I’m sure more initiatives will become important to me. But at the moment, I’m focusing on supporting causes that are close to my heart. In addition to my skin care line “Devonne By Demi” and my hair extension line “Secret Color,” I launched The Lovato Treatment Scholarship which funds mental health treatment for those who cannot afford it.

Child stars often buckle under public scrutiny and the pressure of maintaining a wholesome image growing up. How do you deal with the ups and downs of fame?

I have a really great support system. People are always going to have negative things to say, but I try to focus on the positives. People who used to bring me down aren’t in my life anymore, and I rely on my family and friends to keep me grounded.

What or who is your main source of strength and inspiration?

My strength comes from many places—my family, my friends and my fans. They’ve been there for me every step of the way and their constant love and support are what motivate me to stay strong.

You’ve been through a lot for someone so young. What’s the most important life lesson you’ve learned so far?

I feel like the most important thing I’ve learned is to love yourself first. Especially for the younger generation—there’s a lot of pressure nowadays to live up to the standards that are set by the media, but at the end of the day what truly matters is how you feel about yourself.

What’s your message to the kids who look up to you?

To not try to aspire to be like all of the definitions of “perfect” set by others, just be confident in who you are and don’t be afraid to be yourself.
