Mini T’boli ‘agung’

This is a miniature or musical gong that is part of the kulintang ensemble that is typical in the southern areas of the Philippines. The agung is a traditional masculine instrument that has a deep sound. It is used for announcing important occasions like tribal meetings, or for warning others of impending danger. The agung is believed to possess supernatural powers.

 

This agung replica is made by the T’boli tribe of South Cotabato, cast from beeswax and made from upcycled brass materials. The stand also uses the traditional weave of the T’boli called t’nalak.

Bells have been used to guide the way and ward off evil spirits. Among the T’boli, an indigenous, very musical tribe living in the highlands of Lake Sebu, South Cotabato, Philippines, bell making is one of the traditional arts. They hang these bells by the entrance to their homes.

This bell made from recycled brass and cast from beeswax features traditional design details made more precious by the handmade beadwork of the students of The Learning Center, a school for special needs students in Parañaque, Manila, Philippines.
