This hilarious Instagram account keeps food reviews real | Lifestyle.INQ

OCTOBER 27, 2022

This bite-size Instagram account’s effort to spare people from long-winded, garnish-filled food reviews makes one really hungry and at the same time gassy—from laughing.

The person behind “Masarap ba” has yet to reveal his/her true identity, but describes it as “ang pinaka-honest na food review account sa history of mankind.”

Its method/style is a radical alternative, a direct opposite of the typical food review, short and on point—a photo of the dish is uploaded along with a text overlay of the food’s name, the restaurant that serves it, and a rating of “masarap,” or “hindi masarap.”

There are a few exceptions, though, such as the following: Las Flores’ Paella Negra: “P**a ang sarap,”; Lorenzo’s Way’s Crispy Pata: “My god, sarap”; or Tim Ho Wan’s famous pork buns: “Lord, sobrang sarap.”

The witty and snarky captions are outstanding in their humor—we cracked up when a certain dish earned praise but was also reviled for using raisins because, “ang pasas ay salot sa lipunan.” (We couldn’t agree more; we’re still traumatized by a birthday party we attended at age 6, in which the spaghetti had raisins in it.)

While Masarap Ba continues to rack up fans and followers, some food establishments don’t seem to be amused. Some have posted haughty replies in an attempt to argue in defense of their food, while some chefs, like JP Anglo (Sarsa, Kafé Batwan) have taken it all in stride, thanking the site and going back to the kitchen to do some tweaking on the dish that received a “Hindi masarap” rating.
