Denim is forever, but that doesn’t mean all cuts and washes are always in favor with the fashionable set. This year, as tempting as it is to ride on the ’80s revival and unearth that acid-wash pair of yore, we suggest keeping it chic and classy.
Sleeveless, collared version
The piece: Zip-up dress
The vibe: The ’90s saw the decline of zip-up denim after turning it into a glorified tube dress. Now, the sleeveless, collared version is the way to go. Best worn layered.
Topshop top, Warehouse dress
Sophisticated
The piece: Culottes overalls
The vibe: If the pinafore dress were pants, equal parts girly and tomboy, depending on how you style it. Also infinitely more sophisticated than workwear dungarees, without a doubt.
Warehouse top, Topshop overalls
DIY
The piece: Ripped and splattered
The vibe: Resurrect ugly jeans with DIY abandon. The more destroyed the better! The paint will stand out more on dark denim if mixed with white acrylic.
Warehouse trench coat, Forever 21 top, Lee jeans, Converse sneakers
Bell-bottoms
The piece: Drama flare
The vibe: Good ol’ pair of bell-bottoms in all its retro glory, turned up a style notch with a high waist and a true blue wash. An extra touch of braided waistband won’t hurt.
