Patti Grandidge takes Pilates beyond the studio | Lifestyle.INQ

OCTOBER 27, 2022

Modified torso press Sitting in a Pilates Stability Chair, Patti is doing an advanced exercise that strengthens both her core as well as her back extensors, working in cocontraction to keep the trunk stable and maintain her form. This move also works and develops control of the hip flexors, which are responsible for keeping both her legs up like a tabletop. An alternative and even more advanced step is for one to straighten both legs at 45 degrees. Here, one of Patti's arms was placed on the pedal while the other arm was raised upwards. An easier alternative to this is by having both hands on the pedal with the arms outwardly rotated to add significant stretch to the chest. THE CORE plays a big role in the moves one does in Pilates. Once it is strong enough, everything else will gain strength, making the body capable of doing more.

For model Patti Grandidge, outside the studio she now walks straighter, her posture has improved, she stands taller, and she has gained more confidence and poise.

Pilates has helped her develop a positive fitness attitude, as well as a better outlook on her health and wellbeing. She never dreads nor puts off her workouts, but instead looks forward to every session with her trainer.

As a person, Patti is definitely more aware of her body. She grew up with sports such as gymnastics and dance, so arching her back was something she always did. However, with Pilates, she is now more cautious to tuck her pelvis in, aligning her shoulders, watching the placement of her head and neck, and most importantly, breathe properly while doing all these.

These are things she learned from VZ (Vivian Zapanta) Dance Studios; she takes them with her as she goes through her busy tasks each day.

Patti knows how body goals and fitness aspirations are important to many people. However, she advises that having a healthy mindset is definitely the most important part. Learning to love yourself and your relationship with your body is something she thinks people should develop.

“If you get your physical and mental state in harmony, you’ll remain empowered and confident in your journey to health and happiness,” she says.

PATTI Grandidge Hanging loose This pose has no precise Pilates name, but can be called “hanging strap exercise on the Cadillac.” This exercise targets Patti’s core as it is challenged due to the engagement of the abdominals in order to keep the trunk stable, and to prevent hyperextension of the back. Also, it offers a great challenge to the arms, shoulders, and upper back. Strength and stability of the upper body are needed to accomplish this exercise without injuring oneself, so it’s best to do preparatory exercises for the arms and back before trying this. Grip strength, as well as shoulder stability, are also big factors when trying to achieve hanging exercises, since when your entire body is hanging, its weight will be carried by the arms. Progressing to hanging exercises from your regular workouts may be hard at first, but with time they will be enjoyable, just like they are for Patti. Side bend on ladder barrel This pose is part of the Pilates repertoire and one of the best choices for strengthening the obliques. It also challenges and at the same time increases flexibility in the sides. This exercise is highly recommended for people with muscular imbalance such as scoliosis. The balance and control of the body are also challenged, as no compensatory movements take place.
