There is a well-established relationship between music and memory. Some songs instantly trigger vivid recollections of memories we associate with them, whether it’s your first kiss or that time you and your barkada went on that unforgettably epic road trip.

For a lot of people who grew up in the 90s all the way to the early-noughts, the Eraserheads’ music was the soundtrack that defined a generation. Their songs have become part of Pinoy pop culture canon and have been ingrained in our collective psyche that mere snippets of their songs evoke feelings of nostalgia.

Every time we meet up with friends, there are topics and stories that are sure to surface no matter what. Your barkada reunion is not complete without talking about them. After all, nothing bonds people together like the experiences you’ve shared.

1. MINSAN

No get-together session is complete without reminiscing about the good ol’ days. Some of the best days of our lives are in our youth, with our friends. You might not see each other that often anymore, but when you get together, it’s as if the years get compressed and you’re back to where you left off.

2. LIGAYA

When reminiscing about the good ol’ days, the topic will inevitably veer to past relationships. Someone will almost always bring up the topic with “Remember *insert name of ex- here*?” This is almost always followed by all the cheesy things you’ve done, and some clever social media stalking to see what they’re up to now. Ahh, to be young and in love.

3. PARE KO

"O pare ko, meron ka bang maipapayo? Kung wala ay okay lang. Kailangan lang ay, ang iyong pakikiramay. Andito ka ay ayos na."
“O pare ko, meron ka bang maipapayo? Kung wala ay okay lang. Kailangan lang ay, ang iyong pakikiramay. Andito ka ay ayos na.”

We all have that one friend who’s always been there for us, no matter what. For anyone who has ever relied on a buddy to pull you through tough times, whether it’s relationship problems, strict parents, or finishing your thesis 5 minutes before the submission deadline, you now laugh at how naive you were when you thought getting that failing grade in Algebra was the end of your world.

4. OVERDRIVE

Road trips are some of the most memorable times in anyone’s life. The freedom of the open road, driving down the highway with the windows down, and the anticipation of arriving at your destination will forever be etched in your memories.

5. SEMBREAK

Few things in a young person’s life are as exciting as the last day of school. Knowing that you have several weeks of absolute freedom from homework, quizzes, and your professors, is something every teenager looks forward to. You have to admit, though, as much as you enjoy the break between semesters / school year, you also find yourself looking forward to coming back to school a couple of weeks in, and hanging out with your friends again.

6. MAGASIN

Every batch has that one (or two, or three, depending on your school) person who either becomes a full-on celebrity or, at the very least, hit semi-celebrity status after graduating. The surprising thing is, a lot of the time, it’s not the most popular kid in school but the nondescript guy (or girl) sitting in the back who makes the cut after graduation.

7. POORMAN’S GRAVE

"I’m gonna use up all the money that I saved, coz I don’t wanna lie in a poor man’s grave."
“I’m gonna use up all the money that I saved, coz I don’t wanna lie in a poor man’s grave.”

Quarter-life crisis — we’ve all been there. The feeling that your life is going nowhere and you’re dreading the future. It sometimes leaves you wondering “How did our parents do it?” You look back fondly at those times and you smile at your past worries, because somehow, you got through it.

For some, nostalgia goes hand in hand with memories of unrequited love. Regrets about what we could’ve/should’ve/would’ve done — but never did. For a lot of people, this circles back to that one person who was perfect for you but got away, simply because the time wasn’t right. Today we call it hugot. Or if you’re a younger millennial, the #feels.

9. WALANG NAGBAGO

At some point in the middle of your get-together with friends, you will realize that despite being a little bit older, a little bit chubbier, and a little bit more worldly, at the very core of it, you’re all still the same people you were when you were younger. Nothing’s changed. And that’s why you’re all still complete and together.
