Teresa of Avila relic

The image and first-class relic of St. Teresa of Avila are enshrined for veneration at the Our Lady of Veritas Chapel in Quezon City until Oct. 15, her feast.

St. Teresa of Avila was born in Gotarrendura, in the province of Ávila, Spain, in 1515. After the death of her mother she was sent for her education to the Augustinian nuns at Ávila.

In the monastery she suffered greatly from illness. During these years of suffering she began the practice of mental prayer, eventually she started to have visions and the vivid sense of the presence of God that led her to a life of extreme devotion.

At the age of 43, she became determined to found a new convent that went back to the basics of a contemplative order: a simple life of poverty devoted to prayer. This effort met strong opposition from several quarters but, in 1562, she received an approval for a new foundation, the Discalced Carmelites, later joined by Saint John of the Cross, eventually leading to the establishment of a new foundation for men that was placed under his care.

St. Teresa was canonized by Pope Gregory XV in 1622 and was named a Doctor of the Church by Pope Paul VI on Sept. 27, 1970. She is the patron saint of lacemakers, the religious, headaches sufferers and sickness.

Radio Veritas chapel is at 2/F, Veritas Tower, 162 West Ave. and Edsa, QC.

Typhoon-struck Batanes

The Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines, through the National Secretariat for Social Action (Nassa) and Caritas Philippines, launched a solidarity appeal to all the 85 dioceses nationwide to help the families affected by the recent strong typhoons which hit Batanes.

Batanes Bishop Camilo D. Gregorio has particularly appealed for the rehabilitation of at least two schools and five churches which were heavily damaged by the typhoon.

Latest data from the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) showed that supertyphoon “Ferdie” (Meranti) affected 4,588 families and damaged more than 2,000 houses.
