It’s been said that the fastest way for a woman to update her look is with a swipe of flattering red lipstick.

Sometimes, though, it also requires a hint of bling. That’s the cue to bring out your favorite pieces of jewelry—a pair of shoulder-grazing earrings, perhaps; a stack of shiny bangles; or a cocktail ring that catches the eye with its heft and luster.

A necklace with a pretty locket, like those from the relatively new Dutch brand Lockits, could also be a good option.

Unlike ready-made chains and pendants, Lockits allows customers to build their own design by first choosing from four locket sizes (20 mm, 25 mm, 33 mm and 40 mm) that come in four ion-plated (IP) finishes, namely silver, gold, rose gold and IP black.

Next, they can select from a range of “coins,” circular discs in shapes like flowers, stylized suns or the Tree of Life. There are also coins engraved with testimonials like “Collect beautiful moments” and “Build the life you love,” as well as textured crystal rock coins that glint when the light hits them.

The last step is choosing a chain in a matching or complementary finish.

“The selling point of Lockits is really the customization involved,” said brand manager Marnie Chua said.

“Customers can play around with the pieces and then come up with their own design. Our staff are trained to make suggestions on possible pairings, but if a customer comes up with a unique design, the staff takes a photo so they can replicate it or put it on display.”

An option at the Lockits kiosk is the Mix & Match feature, where customers can choose from a selection of thinner, perforated coins that can be paired with colored mother-of-pearl discs. The resulting look is classier, subtler.

“Mix & Match is one of Lockits’ bestsellers because the coins can be used alone or together, which gives the wearer an option,” Chua said.

He also pointed out that while the lockets may look dainty and fragile, they are made of ion-plated stainless steel, the same material used for steel watches, “making them five to seven times stronger than regular plating.”
