For businessman-politician Luis “Chavit” Singson, the Philippines’ bet in the recently concluded Miss Universe pageant did a good job despite not securing a back-to-back win for the country.

“Okay, magaling siya. Swerte swerte lang talaga. Si Pia (Wurtzbach) nga tatlong beses sumali. Talagang ganun ang beauty contest,” Singson said during a Meet the Inquirer Multimedia forum on Wednesday, when asked about his thoughts on the performance of Miss Universe Philippines Maxine Medina.

(Her performance was okay, she was good. But it was also a matter of luck. Pia joined three times. That’s how beauty contests go.)

Medina, who finished in the Top 6 of the competition, bowed out of the pageant after the question and answer portion. Iris Mittenaere of France was eventually crowned Miss Universe.

In the final question round, Medina was asked by host Steve Harvey about the most significant change she had seen in the world in the past 10 years, to which she answered: “In the last 10 years of being here in the world, I saw that all the people bring in one event like this Miss Universe. And it’s something big to us, that we are one as one nation, that we are all together.”

If Singson were asked the same question, he said his answer would have been: “Ang malaking pagbabago ‘yung social media. Noong araw wala yun eh (Social media is the biggest change. It did not exist before).”

Asked about his thoughts on the results, the businessman-politician said he was surprised that some of what he described as more beautiful candidates did not make it to the Top 13, which was determined through the results of preliminary competitions and interviews.

“Hindi ko naririnig si Miss France. Nagulat lang akong may magagandang hinndi nakapasok sa top 13,” Singson said.

(Miss France’s name did not come up a lot. I was just surprised that there were beautiful candidates who did not make the top 13.)

“Nami-miss ko lang sila. Magaganda lahat (I miss them. They were all beautiful),” he added in jest. IDL
