Franciscan friar Fr. Tony M. Rosales, OFM, former parish priest of Santuario de San Antonio in Forbes Park, Makati, has a new book, “The Encounter that Changed Missions Forever.”

The book is on dialogue as represented in the encounter between St. Francis of Assisi and Sultan Melek-El-Kamel in Egypt in 1219. Though the encounter might not have made an impact at the time, its effects on the missions in the succeeding centuries have been considerable, writes Fr. Rosales.

In 1221, St. Francis wrote the first rule of a religious order that spoke of the missions, specifically in Muslim lands.

The book was recently launched at the St. Bonaventure House, Lanang, Davao City. (For information on the book,

Father Rosales (tel. 0905-2690638) is now based in Punta Princesa, Cebu City. He also teaches theology at the St. Alphonsus Theological and Mission Institute in Davao City.

Veritas, AMRSWP on Edsa

As part of its special programming for the 31st observance of Edsa People Power Revolution, Radio Veritas featured Sister Mary John Mananzan, OSB, former president of St Scholastica’s College, and Cenacle Sr. Sonia Punzalan.

They talked about the participation of nuns and other religious in the struggle to depose the Marcos dictatorship and restore democracy in the country. They expressed sadness at the burial of Marcos in the Libingan ng mga Bayani and the drug killings under the Duterte administration.

It was through RV where the Jaime Cardinal Sin, archbishop of Manila, called for People Power.

Archbishop Socrates Villegas of Lingayen-Dagupan decried the “rape” of Edsa. He also condemned the “relentless killings of the poor in the name of change.”

Meanwhile, Sister Regina Kuizon, provincial of the Religious of the Good Shepherd, said she wasn’t yet a nun in 1986 but as a communications professional, was working at Cardinal Sin’s media office.

Now head of the Association of Major Religious Superiors of Women in the Philippines, Kuizon reiterated AMRSWP’s statement condemning the drug killings.

“Let us be mindful of the God who created us,” Kuizon said, ” the God who ‘causes His sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous.’”
