There is something that builds up in our bodies through the passage of time. Little do we know that every life experience, positive or negative, makes an impact in our inner selves, either challenging or strengthening our sense of balance.

All the habits we carry, whether good or bad, affect our general health in many ways. While the way we live may not be so visibly seen and dramatically felt, soon enough it will be.

The human body can take much abuse. It is designed to survive neglect. But, like all machines, it can reach its breaking point.

Take charge

Let us accept the imperfections of our finiteness by taking charge of our lives today. Prevent the “it’s too late” prognosis of health experts. Do not wait.

Take action through little acts of kindness toward ourselves. You can begin today.

Address the three vital components of who you are: body, mind and spirit.

Your body needs a workout, literally. Studies have shown that people who do not exercise have a weaker defense against illness and aging.

As little as 20 minutes a day is all you need to keep your heart in good condition. But there’s a catch. You must exercise daily and nonstop.

Golfers brag that they walk for three to four hours during a game. But the walk-stop-walk action doesn’t count as a good cardiovascular workout.

The best way would be to walk continuously for 20 minutes without any letup.

Proper nutrition

Eating a balanced diet can never be overemphasized. A moderate share of protein, carbohydrates, vegetables and fruits is necessary in order to ensure optimum nutrition.

Hydration is a must. Generous servings of water are required to stay hydrated.

Get enough rest. Your work-play ratio should be even. Sleep deprivation leads to a weak immune system.

The brain, which is the seat of the mind, needs adequate rest. So, when you sleep, the body isn’t just repairing itself. The brain, during quality sleep, is able to recharge. Guard the brain and care for your body simultaneously.

Positive thinking

The process of thinking too much can create problems within. As a result, stress hormones flood your system.

You can think your way to illness or wellness. Just think happy thoughts. It is a good start.

Your heart and spirit are one. And often, the mind joins in on their interaction. Calm the spirit by quieting the mind and soothing the heart. Whatever you think, you will also feel.

Neuroscience has proven this to be true. All thoughts create physical sensations, just as all feelings be-
come physical.

Guard your heart by summoning the power of love, not hatred or anger. If you don’t, then the consequences can be physically painful. You could experience palpitations, migraine, high blood pressure, etc.

Detox

Here is a typical detox day. Upon waking, open your eyes slowly. Get out of bed calmly. Give thanks for another day of life. Face the mirror. Smile. Affirm something wonderful, like “It will be a great day.”

Do your morning ritual. Take a 20-minute brisk walk before breakfast. Drink two glasses of water with a squeeze of five calamansi or ¼ of a lemon.

Have a big bowl of fresh fruits. Take a shot of freshly made wheatgrass juice or a shot of Organique Acai.

Body brush yourself for five minutes in the shower.

Have a hearty lunch. Whatever your choices, begin with a big bowl of salad greens. Take a cup of green tea or ginger tea after your meal.

Midafternoon, have a healthy snack that may include a sandwich with greens mixed in. If you will order a juice, make it freshly-made.

In the evening, eat light, not heavy. Do not bring home any work. It is your time to relax and unwind.

Go easy on carbohydrates and red meats.
