The bathroom is one of the busiest and most important parts of any household. It’s our perpetual partner in keeping our ~bodily functions~ a-okay, as well as our hygiene in check. However, it’s also the least favorite of many people to clean.

It’s true that bathroom cleaning is challenging, but it’s something we shouldn’t be mediocre about. It’s best to keep the bathroom as sanitary as possible to ensure it won’t be a breeding place for germs.

We don’t need to clean it thoroughly each day, but a little change in mindset about our bathroom use will surely go a long way.

Bookmark these reminders to make bathroom cleaning simple and easy for you:

1. Try to keep everything in the bathroom dry.

Frequency: Daily

  • Store toiletries in a medicine or a vanity cabinet

Most Filipino households use plastic shelves as containers for their toiletries, which is convenient and practical. It’s unhealthy to think, however, that it’s okay to get the waterproof shelf or the toiletries soaked a bit during shower. When you leave all these things damp, you give mildew (fungus) an ideal moist surface to grow in. And the worst part is, you make direct contact with these items every day. Whereas if you have a medicine or a vanity cabinet, which you’d surely prefer dry, you’ll consciously exert effort in wiping your toiletries before storing them in the furniture.

  • Spread the shower liner after shower

The shower liner will inevitably acquire drips after every shower so instead of parting it one way to keep the shower open, lay out the liner for it to dry.

  • Dry the shower walls and other wet areas

The shower walls are the most prone to mildew growth in the bathroom as it’s always left soaked. Use a squeegee to wipe the walls dry after a shower. Also check the floor and the door, and dry if drizzled.

  • Ventilate

When there’s good ventilation in the bathroom, even a small window counts, there won’t be too much need for mopping and wiping since ventilation will significantly help dry up space.

2. Deep clean main parts of the bathroom.

Frequency: Weekly

  • Bathroom countertop and sink

Pour hot water into the sink to loosen dirt, wipe dry, and then scrub the sink and countertop using your bathroom cleaner.

  • Shower

Using your cleaner or white vinegar, scrub soap scum and water marks off from your shower walls. Repeat the process until the walls are free of dirt, and then rinse.

  • Toilet

Pour your cleaner into the bowl, be sure to reach for the area under the rim, and then scrub the bowl using a toilet brush. Flush once done, and then repeat the process if necessary.

If there are hard water rings in the bowl, use white vinegar to remove.

Don’t forget to scrub and disinfect the toilet exterior.

  • Grout

Use a neutral pH floor cleaner and a mop to clean tiled bathroom floors. Also, make it a habit to check grout seals if in need of replacement.

3. Unclog pipes.

Frequency: Monthly

  •   Showerhead

Mineral residue from hard water can congest your showerhead. When this happens, you don’t have to call anyone for help as a simple soak in white vinegar can quickly solve your problem. For non-handheld showerhead, soak it in a plastic bag full of white vinegar and secure it with a rubber band. Leave for about 12 hours or more, depending on how clogged your showerhead is.

  • Drain

You can unclog your drain chemical-free if you have the time and patience to fish out dirt from it manually. You can guess how this works. Remove the stopper and use a hook to reach the hairy mess and other minute waste clogging your drain.

But for a hassle-free clog prevention, home cleaning expert Molly Maid suggests a nylon netting over the drain will do the trick.

4. Keep the bathroom fragrant.

Frequency: Daily

Keep your bathroom smelling fresh and relaxing by placing a potpourri or a few scented candles with mild aroma inside. Just remember not to overdo it with the candles to avoid any scent-induced discomfort (such as sensory irritation or asthma), and put a safe distance between the scented lights and anything flammable.

A few adjustments in the way you use your bathroom daily can cause a big difference in the amount of cleaning it’ll require later on. When you do this, you’re not only lessening the hassle of regular deep bathroom cleaning, but you’re also making the space a safe and healthy place for your family.
