Steal ‘(500) Days of Summer’s’ Zooey Deschanel’s quirky look
A FULL HEAD OF DARK brown hair, thick long lashes crowning clear blue gray eyes, a fashion sense without frills, and defiant taste in music—Zooey Deschanel as Summer Finn in “(500) Days of Summer” could just be every guy’s dream girl. If she isn’t, then she’s every girl’s dream girl.
As the credits of the fun flick roll, every adolescent girl in the theater has probably forgotten of Hollywood’s scantily clad, booty shakin’, sequin-wearing starlet and traded up their sights for Deschanel’s indie charm. Because donning sleeves, knee length-skirts, and vintage-inspired pieces are sexy too, especially when they’re merely accessories to a carefree spirit.
Deschanel’s choices of garb are more often than not, quite unique compared to her contemporaries, preferring modest silhouettes and hemlines and rarely wearing tons of accessories. She keeps things simple, going for the underdressed rather than the overdressed style school of thought. At the 2009 Vanity Fair Oscar Party, Deschanel wore a short sequined mini dress, but kept her hair down and finished the look with gray peep-toes and a simple silver clutch, which showcased her casual persona.
While she favors feminine pieces, which are slightly reminiscent of 1950’s fashion, her character Summer Finn leans towards vintage, basic pieces, mixed and matched for an array of looks. Rather than having a closet full of clothes, Finn’s style is maximizing what’s on hand. Dig up A-line skirts and button downs in neutrals or basic colors like navy, and match them with a simple pair of ballet flats or low-heeled peep-toe wedges.
But what is the Deschanel or Finn fashion sense without the allure of her face? Thankfully, in this department, she keeps it simple as well. Wear your natural hair color with pride and just be sure to amp up or control the volume for sexy waves of dark brown or black hair.
If you’re feeling a bit adventurous (or in Zooey’s case, free spirited), get some bangs, and don’t be afraid to tie a ribbon on your ponytail or use as a hairband. Play up your eyes with volumizing black mascara (try VMV’S Ooh-La-Lash! Volumizing Mascara, P1,000), clean but natural brows, and a bit of berry lip stain (The Face Shop Freshian Real Tint in #302 Cherry, P445) or peach blush and lipstick. If you want to go for the whole nine-yards, invest in some gray contact lenses.
Set aside the runways and their boatloads of accessories and studs and stand out in Deschanel’s simple looks. Believe it or not, it’s the most eye-catching of all.
