KAY, SO WE?VE ESTABLISHED THAT ?New Moon? is all about Bella?s anguish over Edward leaving her. But if you?re expecting its soundtrack to be made up of cheesy love songs that will make you jump off a cliff in sheer depression like our heartbroken heroine did, think again.
While ?Twilight?s? musical repertoire mostly yielded angst-ridden, ?you and me against the world? riffs as heralded by Paramore?s ?Decode,? the music of ?New Moon? weaves a more subdued, ?star-crossed lovers? vibe. Alexandra Patsavas, music supervisor for ?Gossip Girl? and ?Grey?s Anatomy,? picks out the best from her indie playlist to come up with a nifty little compilation full of haunting melodies, subdued synth effects and ethereal vocals to set the mood for breaking (and making) up. Let?s put it this way: if a hopelessly lovestruck human girl ever made a playlist of songs to convey her feelings to her supernatural beloved, this would most probably be it. A mixtape of mixed emotions is what this album is, seamlessly drifting back and forth between Bella?s tortured love for Edward and her growing feelings for Jacob.
Leading the pack is the explosive first track ?Meet Me On The Equinox? by indie giant Death Cab For Cutie, with The Killers? eerily captivating serenade ?A White Demon Love Song? and Radiohead frontman Thom Yorke?s much-talked-about single ?Hearing Damage? adding the Goth-rock flavor to the compilation.
The bulk of the album is made up of bittersweet acoustic gems that tug at your heartstrings, such as Anya Marina?s ?Satellite Heart,? Grizzly Bear?s ?Slow Life,? Black Motorcycle Rebel Club?s ?Done All Wrong? and Bon Iver & St. Vincent?s ?Roslyn,? which could very well be the counterpart of the ?Twilight? soundtrack?s signature tearjerker ?Flightless Bird, American Mouth? by Iron And Wine. We can almost imagine a brooding Bella holed up in her room, dreaming about Edward (and Jacob, probably).
Wrapping up the melancholy atmosphere are the piano ballads, Lykke Li?s ?Possibility,? The Editors? ?No Sound But The Wind? and the beautiful instrumental by Alexandre Desplat.
Meanwhile, the more upbeat tracks??Friends? by Band Of Skulls, ?Monsters? by Hurricane Bells, the ?80s punk/new wave-tinged ?Violet Hour? by Sea Wolf and OK Go?s ?Shooting The Moon??sing about Bella?s happier days with Jacob as he helps her back on her feet.
Of course, the soundtrack wouldn?t be complete without the requisite song from Stephenie Meyer?s ultimate ?muse??a remixed version of Muse?s ?I Belong To You,? a jaunty, glam rock-esque track that sums up the whole surreal listening experience.
