The modern woman knows no barriers, and for them, there’s no such thing as a man’s world. With a snazzy fusion of spunk and chic, Pilar Almario shows you that beauty and brains aren’t her only merits. She talks about growing up, the benefits of working out, and her take on personal style.

On growing up

I’ve realized you shouldn’t take life too seriously, especially while you’re still young. This is the time we’re given to make mistakes, as we have no solid responsibilities yet. Enjoy this phase because it’s not going to last forever. Balance school, extracurricular activities, social life and family.

How do you balance school, work and your social life?

Lately, I have been juggling a lot of things. I’m a full-time Communication Arts student at DLSU, an intern writer at Clickthecity.com, a junior jock at Magic 89.9, and I host events from time to time. Aside from these commitments, I set aside time for my social life and working out. I have to admit that fitting all these things into my schedule is tough because there is only so much I can accomplish. I also believe that stress is simply a state of mind. If I can keep calm and just focus on what I need to do, everything turns out perfectly.

What are your hobbies and interests?

I love to talk and hang out with my friends. I enjoy partying, too. I like going to the gym. I play tennis. I also enjoy trying out new things; I recently tried Pilates. I work out at Core Kinesis at Legend Villas. It’s not your average gym, the personal training services are private and of the best quality. My internship is also something I’m really having fun with.

Of all things to get into, why devote time to working out?

Working out in my gym takes me less than an hour, and with my busy schedule, it’s easy to squeeze in. I also like how, despite all the things I have going on, I have an hour just to focus on myself. I take the opportunity to exercise and clear my mind at the same time. It’s become part of my lifestyle and the benefits are great. I lost weight and I feel really healthy.

For those who have no time to work out, what can you suggest?

I recommend that you go and look for something you enjoy. Do not limit yourself to the traditional gyms; do something that keeps you interested, and make sure it’s safe. There are so many physical activities to choose from! You can run, play a sport, go to the gym, try out an exercise class with friends. If you like what you’re doing and you start seeing results, this will motivate you to keep doing it.

Where do you get style inspiration?

My favorite blog is https://thesartorialist.blogspot.com/. I get a lot of outfit ideas from here. I like how it’s simple and classic. I’m very laid-back so I think it suits my personality.

What would be an ideal outfit for you for day and for night?

During the day, I like wearing khakis, white shorts, and light wash jeans with just a simple top or tee. My shoes of choice vary from boat shoes to my favorite white loafers. In the evening, I like wearing dresses that accentuate my waist and a good pair of heels.

What is your favorite item in your closet?

Jeans I purchased from Levi’s in 2008—its timeless!

Favorite stores/shopping places?

Pilar Almario

My favorite stores are Cotton On, Zara, H&M, Bershka, Mango and Uniqlo. Most of my clothes are from these stores. I’m of Spanish descent, so my butt and hips are bigger than normal. I am not ashamed of it; in fact, I choose to embrace it. Clothing from these stores fit me better. Luckily, I travel a lot so I am able to shop when I go out of the country.

In terms of your personal style, how do you put together your outfits? Colors, patterns?

I’m really laid-back. I use a lot of black, especially when I go out at night. Purple is another favorite color of mine. School outfits are really chill, I use a lot of collared shirts and V-necks. Going to the gym, I use my favorite black Nike capri tights with plain T-shirts. I  wish we had colder weather in the Philippines, so I could layer more. Fortunately, I get to layer when I travel.
