MANILA, Philippines—A Filipino scientist disputed the Mayan calendar’s prediction that the end of the world will happen on December 21, 2012.

“It has no basis at all. It’s just the date corresponds to the end of their calendar data, which is more than 5,000 years old,” said Engineer Dario dela Cruz, chief of PAGASA space science and astronomy section, in an interview with reporter Louie Garcia and anchor John Susi on Radio Inquirer early Wednesday.

He explained there’s an expected alignment of the Solar System and the Milky Way galaxy on the said date.

Dela Cruz’s interview also tackled the Transit of Venus and the lunar eclipse in November this year, which is another event to watch out for.

“But it’s penumbral, meaning the sun is not going to be darkened. It’s going to be yellowish,” said Dela Cruz.  Totel V. de Jesus, INQUIRER.net
