Surprise! Aquino confesses up on his teenage crush: Legarda

It took President Benigno Aquino III about four decades to confess to a company of political friends that he had a teenage “crush.”

While members of Team PNoy were having lunch at a seafood restaurant by the beach in Arevalo district in Iloilo City on Thursday, the President—out of the blue—admitted that Sen. Loren Legarda had been his crush since he was 18.

What made this confession startling, to say the least, was that he said it in front of the senator herself.

“When I saw Loren before—I will say it now in front of everybody—we were still teenagers, but I already had a crush on her,” Mr. Aquino said in a matter-of-fact tone.

Legarda blushed. The usually bubbly senator—known for thinking aloud, especially on climate change and disaster risk reduction, women and children, and culture and heritage—was speechless for a moment.

Some of those at the table said Mr. Aquino’s words were like Cupid’s arrows that hit the senator right in the heart.

At the time, Mr. Aquino was already having dessert—a slice of Brazo de Mercedes—while the candidates, who had come from separate rallies in the city, had barely started to eat.

Among those who heard the confession of Mr. Aquino—who is still a bachelor at 53—were Interior Secretary Mar Roxas, reelectionist Senators Aquilino “Koko” Pimentel III and Antonio Trillanes IV, former Akbayan Rep. Risa Hontiveros, Iloilo Rep. Janette Garin and Las Piñas Rep. Mark Villar.

Another date

Mr. Aquino did not give them room for speculation. He pressed on, as if trying to refresh Legarda’s memory, dishing out interesting details of his first meeting with the lass from Malabon.

Mr. Aquino reminded Legarda that they met for the first time in Caloocan City sometime in the 1970s but he couldn’t make a move because he was with his girlfriend.

“We were still teenagers. Isn’t it? Remember, I met you in Caloocan when I was with a friend. From the time I was a teenager, Loren has been my crush,” he said.

Embracing literally

Legarda, in an attempt to change the topic, blurted out a jumble of meaningless phrases, which quickly escaped the memory of those lunching with the President.

It took Roxas, a confidant of the President and former colleague of Legarda in the Senate, to break the shock of the presidential revelation by saying Mr. Aquino was not just embracing common candidates with open arms, but also doing it literally.

“Remember, P-Noy (President Aquino) embraced the common candidates from Day 1. That’s not just figurative, but also literal,” Roxas said.

A good laugh

This was the day the United Nationalist Alliance (UNA) announced that it had decided to drop all three common candidates—Legarda, Sen. Francis Escudero and Grace Poe.

In a talk with reporters that day, Mr. Aquino said that since the launching of the slate last year, “we have already wholly embraced these three candidates. That’s figuratively, all right? Figuratively. So we have nothing to say about what the UNA intends to do. We have a democracy. It’s up to them. As for us, we will work hard for all our allies,” he said.

“And remember, six-year term, so even by the time that I stepped out of office, these are the people who can continue the transformation of our country. Therefore, it behooves me to really push and press and campaign as much as possible for each and everyone,” he said.

Legarda, the only female candidate to twice top senatorial elections (1998 and 2007), has decided to seek another six-year term in May to continue fighting for the rights of women, children, indigenous groups and senior citizens, as well as ensure that all the laws she has written will be implemented down to the grassroots’ level.

2016 plans

The President told reporters last December that he was looking forward to attending to matters of the heart after his term ends in 2016.

When he became President in 2010, he continued to date a few women—mostly out of the public’s view—but didn’t get his mind to wrap around the idea of finding a bride while in Malacañang.

Legarda, whose marriage to former Batangas Gov. Antonio Leviste  was annulled in 2008, says she is content with being a single mother to two teenage sons.

another UTO UTO campaign propaganda method!!!!!!

HELLO UTO UTO NATION… we should now vote for Legarda because she was Pwenoy’s crush
    fcuking stupid

      Paranoid, narrow-minded, immature comment.

gullible fool = Karabukov….. prime specimen of the Uto Uto nation

      • Karabukov

Believe it, don’t believe it, what does it matter? I sure won’t lose sleep over it. If it makes you happy, s*ck it up.

  • Karabukov

I see some unkind comments here. Asikasuhin daw muna niya ang trabaho niya bilang presidente.

Can’t a good leader be human too?

If Ms. Legarda would like to go for a lunch date, go for it Mr. President.

    Next, a dinner date.

Breakfast, bahala na sila r’un, baka magalit ang mga bishops, he he.

    • spitfire

The “unkind comments” is not solely for PNoy. The criticisms show contempt for the author and the editor of this media for glorifying on PNoy’s fantasized love life, accomodating a venue for diversion, and making this page a tabloid section. In sum, it insults the minds of the reading public.

If the author has transvestites tendencies then he should publish his hogwash in the entertainment page. Bakit pa sila may entertainment page kung pati gossips ay pwede pala i-front page headline?

      • Karabukov

Come on, spitfire, anything presidential, including his allergies (I know, I know, medical privacy and all) and what he eats for breakfast is fair game, or should I say, is every patriotic Pinoy’s concern. He will always be a person of interest to Filipinos right to the end of his term, and beyond. That is not to say that he is also fair game for unbridled and unfair criticism, but that has also been his lot from day one. Well, this one is not bad news by any stretch of the imagination, though I can also grant that it may bump up the circulation of the Inquirer a few notches, so why the need to sneak it in the entertainment section where spitfire et al will simply miss it because they don’t want their teen-age kids to catch them looking for some juicy blind items, ha ha.

Really, if the president’s love life takes a nice turn into matrimonial bliss, I do not see it as bad for the country, but something to celebrate and be happy about.

      • spitfire

Dati mainit ang exchanges natin then I realized your a nice guy and intelligent after all so made peace with. Until now I did not realize that you are that gullible. Thanks for the exchanges anyway.

      • Karabukov

Gullible? He he. You’re just too serious, my friend. Lighten up.

Or, did you think the president’s gay and news of this nature is just a plant for people to think otherwise? If it makes them happy, I’ll go along with that too. No problem, ha ha.

  • jurbinsky77

It was a dessert moment, whatever the President said, let him be. And you? Chill up.

  • Albert Einstien

it’s better if pnoy could find his true love & his true love should also love him…it’s the heart that makes us human….so that the loneliness will not manifest in his attacks to the society & his enemies..like the issue of SULTANATE ..he is acting as spokeperson of malaysian govt intead of protecting filipino citizens, like the PERPETUAL personal attacks to corona & gma…while his KKK is being coddled and allowed to abuse the people’s interest..

my unsolcited advice  to pnoy…MARRY Now while you are still in power….somebody might  love you….never mind if they love you for  your position & money sir….it’s the NORM anyway……the problem will be ….. Physical ……..baka RETIRED na rin si MANOY ..without being useful…..in this world everybody is equal….AGING……lol

    • alconce

“MARRY Now while you are still in power”       Does he still have that power beneath his pants to ignite it with all the pistons fired up at full throttle? Very doubtful. It’s nothing but a cheap political gimmick. Besides, me thinks Loren is intellectually superior and  is a mismatch of sorts.

      • Albert Einstien

baka RETIRED na rin si MANOY ..without being useful…..in this world everybody is equal….AGING……lol

that’s the message…with mismatch of intellect …..i agree legarda is a milky way away  from where pnoy  stands…. .lol

  • daniboy2012

Pinotchiee need PEDS first before having a new relationship…but he got my vote on legarda!

  • ValencianoEd

Aquino-Legarda.  That would be a good team up for a marriage.  THe two are mature enough to discern.  I hope PNoy’s admitting a crush on Loren will develop into something more concrete.  And I hope, PNoy is not going to be coy, or turn cold feet  if Loren gives him a chance to woo her.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_Q3QGG5QHBLRMZTIYWUFURY6J2E Night

UTO UTO Filipino right her ValencianoEd… what a naive gullible person you are

Pakulo na naman ng Team Noynoy….when he was running for President, they paired him with Shalani…..when his ratings were going down, the korean girl came in….and now with the senate election..si Legarda naman. ….bet tayo kapag tapos na ang term ni Noynoy, si Boy Abunda na.

    • etomacq

Buti na lang hindi si Chiz ang crush ni Noynoy.. nga pala. hindi sila talo! Magkadugo sila.
