Although new appliances come with warranty cards that list the numbers to call for service, it is a good idea to ask the store for contact numbers just to make sure. Sometimes, between the time the warranty card was printed and the time you purchase the item, the numbers may have changed. Stores should be updated on service center numbers. The store will also be able to tell you if the company provides home service or if you have to bring your 82-inch TV to the service center.

Ask the store, too, where you should bring the appliance for servicing. Some stores will accept items still covered by warranty for repair and take care of sending them to the right places. If going to the store is more convenient for you than going to the service center, this should save you a lot of time and effort.

Do not forget to fill out the warranty card and send it immediately to the manufacturer so they have your record when you call. Keep your portion of the card in a safe place. If you are the type who has to consult the manual every now and then, it may be a good idea to have the warranty card and manual in one place.


Marco Salvador of Navotas City wants to bring to the attention of Samsung his problem with a television set he bought in January from an Abenson branch in Malabon. He said he paid P1,498 for extended warranty coverage.

But after more than eight months, the unit began to malfunction.

Salvador wants to know if he has the right to demand a replacement and to whom should he make the demand?Samsung or Abenson. If the Department of Trade and Industry consumer protection people are reading this, perhaps they can reply to Salvador?s question.
