THE UNIVERSITY of Santo Tomas (UST) will again treat its benefactors, friends and the Thomasian community to an early Yuletide get-together for a cause as the 7th UST Christmas Concert Gala unfolds on Dec. 3, Thursday, 7 p.m. at the UST Chapel.

The Christmas concert will feature world-class Thomasian talents like the UST Singers, soprano Rachelle Gerodias, tenor Abdul Candao, and UST Symphony Orchestra conductor Herminigildo Ranera. Other performers include the USTeMUNDO Ethnic Group, UST Jazz Ensemble and the Tiples de Santo Domingo Boys Choir.

Donations from the Christmas concert gala will be used to bankroll the University’s heritage conservation efforts as one of its quadricentennial projects. The conservation efforts will particularly focus on the restoration of select painting collections of the UST Museum, the oldest school-based museum in the country.

Another beneficiary of the concert is the scholarship program for students of the Conservatory of Music. Part of this year’s concert proceeds will also be allotted to help victims of Typhoons “Ondoy” and “Pepeng.”

The concert will present popular Filipino Christmas songs and the classics.

The UST Singers, who recently won in the 2009 California International Choral festival and Competition, is set to perform “Jesu Joy” by Johann Sebastian Bach and two other upbeat Christmas tunes, while the UST Symphony Orchestra serenades the audience with “Angels and Shepherds” and “Hurry, Hurry Shepherds to Bethlehem.”

Gerodias will sing “In the Bleak Midwinter” and “The Virgin Mary,” while Candao will give his own rendition of “Adeste Fidelis/Hark the Herald Angels Sing” and “When a Child Is Born.”

The USTeMUNDO Ethnic Group meanwhile will play Filipino Christmas songs “Simbang Gabi,” “Sa Paskong Darating,” “Noche Buena” and Pasko na Naman” with kulintang effects set in a fiesta mood.

Maricris Zobel, art patroness, and Rev. Fr. Isidro Abaño, OP, UST Assistant to the Rector for Quadricentennial Activities and Highlights, are the co-chairpersons of this 7th Christmas Concert.
