A wide-brimmed Ascot and floral pink sundress -the perfect attire for watching polo
MOVE OVER SATURDAY because Sunday has become the new hip day for social events. For the past two weekends, my Sundays have been so busy with multiple affairs, starting with early morning fun runs to midday launches for the latest watches, and finally to late-afternoon polo games.

From lazy Sundays that usually did not start until noon, life has evolved to nonstop Sundays featuring race numbers and Ascot hats. In the case of the latter, it was a wide-brimmed Ascot by designer Marilou Laurena, worn with a floral pink sundress from Unarosa Shop, the perfect attire for an afternoon watching polo.

There?s nothing more hoity-toity than to sit in the Manila Polo Club grandstands overlooking the Enrique Zobel Field and watch handsome men ride muscular horses whilst hitting a white ball with a long stick. It?s like golf on horseback, except sweatier.

As one sits amongst the well-heeled members and distinguished guests, it is more than possible to daydream, perhaps about zooming around in one of the testosterone-pumped Porsches or elegant Audis on display outside. To further the daydreaming, a team from PGA Cars was on hand to offer test drives of the new four-door Porsche, the Panamera Turbo or the Audi A5 coupe Quattro, which recently won the coveted 2010 German Design Prize.

Appropriately enough, the 7th Enrique Zobel Cup started with a low goal match between the Porsche Whites and the Porsche Blacks. It was a closely fought game with the Whites winning on account of Manot Montilla?s four goals to the Team Blacks? three.

My Bikram yoga classmate José Constantino was a key player on the Porsche White Team. I guess Bikram and polo mix well. Another yoga classmate, pretty KC Concepcion, was also there, not to play but as a spectator. With all the testosterone in the air, from the four-legged and two-legged studs around, all the fine young ladies in hats seemed to be really enjoying themselves.

After that match, a gorgeous Panamera Turbo appeared in midfield driven by master of ceremonies and technical training manager of the Porsche Training and Recruitment Center Asia, Thorsten Hagel. Together with him and carrying the cup was Ms Bianca Zobel, along with Rocio Zobel and Xavi Tengco. They strode over to the trophy table to join Ms Dee Zobel, wife of the late Enrique Zobel, Porsche Philippines head Roberto Coyiuto III, Audi Philippines head Benedicto Coyiuto and MPC president Juan Santos, to start off the main event.

The high goal match saw the Audi Reds versus the Audi Grays, with Iñigo Zobel giving an outstanding performance. Iñigo had the highest score of the day with six goals to give his team a convincing 11-6 victory over the opposing team. Ah, now that is how a taipan scores!

So Audi Reds and Porsche Whites took the honors at the awarding ceremonies. Right after, the crowd was wowed by a parade of automotive beauties: the Audi A6, A5 Coupe and R8, and the Porsche Panamera Turbo, 911 Carrera and Cayman S, the buffet on the field only rivaled by the food and wine from San Miguel Corp., Wine Depot and Manila Polo Club, of course.

There are more polo matches today in Alabang Country Club. Catch an exciting match and enjoy a fun Sunday afternoon, mesmerized by handsome young men and even more handsome new cars.

Cory Aquino tribute

Sunday outfits should always be colorful. A couple of Sundays ago, Swatch Philippines launched a collection of limited-edition Cory Aquino tribute wristwatches on the eve of what would have been the late former president?s 77th birthday. My yellow outfit was a bright floral gown by LA-based Pinoy designer Oliver Tolentino.

Held in honor of Asia?s democracy icon, the Swatch event featured the unveiling of a giant Cory Aquino Swatch standing 24 feet high at the Ayala Museum. Gift Gate president and Cory supporter Virgie Ramos initiated the Cory tribute watch project.

There are only 801 sets of Cory Aquino tribute watches in the world. The Cory Swatch set includes two watches, one of which is tagged with a serial number, encased in a picture book called ?A Woman Dressed in Sunshine? written by Makati City Rep. Teodoro ?Teddy Boy? Locsin, who served as Cory Aquino?s presidential spokesperson and speech writer.

My feng shui secret friend Virgie was kind enough to save me a limited-edition copy, which I had Jaime Zobel de Ayala autograph, along with Cory?s eldest daughter Ballsy Aquino-Cruz. Don Jaime, who helped design the Cory Aquino tribute watches, said the watches are as special as the woman they honor. His heartfelt words moved the distinguished audience.

How beautiful it is that in a small but important Swatch watch, our Cory becomes alive again. We must all remember not to forget. All of the proceeds from the Cory Swatch will go to the Benigno S. Aquino Jr. Foundation?s scholarship fund.
