When writing songs, which comes first: melody or lyrics?

I like to write all the melodies and lyrics to music that is at least half-way complete. It?s usually lyrics. It irks me when the melodies and lyrical phrases don?t fit right but I also don?t like re-writes.

You cancelled a 2008 tour and nearly disbanded. What lessons did you learn from that?

Be open-minded, love people with all their flaws and just enjoy every second. ?Cause you can?t get ?em back.

You penned two songs for the ?Twilight? movie. Why did you skip the second film? Will you be back for the third? Are you a Twihard?

Josh and I wrote ?Decode,? and ?I Caught Myself? was a collaborative effort on everyone?s part. We skipped the second film because we had our own record to write and promote. Being a part of the phenomenon was such a good time. Yeah, I really loved the books! They helped pass the time on flights to and from the UK.

Do you think of a future beyond Paramore? Like getting a normal job?

There is no backup plan, just music.

Why do you think there has been such a shift from angsty music to ?emo? in popular rock culture?

There?s not much difference other than the fashion associated with ?emo.? That people refer to themselves as ?an emo? is ridiculous. You wouldn?t call yourself ?an angst? would you? ?Emo? just means emotional. We?re no different than the youth of the ?90s...some of us just wear tighter pants.

What is the main emotion of your music, and why do you think your audience shares your experience with the music? (from James Alcantara)

There?s always been a lot of anger and frustration in what I say. It?s my way of getting out all negativity, to clear my head and remain positive. We have always wanted to allow people to find hope in the insanity life creates.
