It’s common knowledge by now that Ramon Ang, top honcho of both San Miguel Corporation and Philippine Airlines, got his start by working as an auto mechanic, fixing cars that he then sold for a profit.
It’s still a 14-hour ride, but the flight is now direct, with no extra hours for layovers or the risk of missing connecting flights, not to mention having to haul carry-on baggage while sprinting toward far-off boarding gates.
Among the most low-key, unassuming yet hardworking people I know are the daughters—the heiresses-apparent—of some of the country’s most powerful fathers. Meeting them makes my job a lot more interesting. They’re a lesson in modesty and how not to wear the mantle of power.
