MakatiMed brings in cutting-edge cancer technology

“THE COMBINATION of prayer, the right medical treatments, the attitude, the love of God, and the wisdom of my doctors helped me overcome my sickness,” says cancer survivor Michelle Dayrit-Soliven.

Cancer care has evolved into a complex and highly specialized area of medicine, and as one of the health institution’s centers of excellence, MakatiMed’s Cancer Center has kept up with the latest and newest advancements in oncology. More than its team of skilled professionals—from oncologists to nurses—it’s also known for its multidisciplinary approach to cancer care.

The mode, timing, and sequence of treatments prescribed to every patient are based upon a collaborative decision of medical specialists, allowing MakatiMed’s Cancer Center to offer all possible treatments that adhere to best current practices, as well as allied services to complement these.

TOMOTHERAPY is a new system for delivering the most advanced, image-guided radiation treatment using intensity modulated radiation therapy, which allows for tumor location verification and precise targeting of cancer cells while minimizing radiation.

“TomoTherapy, which we introduced in 2012, is a new system for delivering the most advanced, image-guided radiation treatment using intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) that allows for tumor location verification and precise targeting of cancer cells while minimizing radiation dose to healthy tissues,” said Dr. Teresa T. Sy Ortin of MakatiMed’s Department of Radiology.

The advantage of such a system is that it allows for the recommendation of more precise doses of radiation without damaging the surrounding tissues, with the beam conforming to any tumor shape. “It’s very much like painting a small, very detailed sculpture using a fine brush as opposed to a big paintbrush.”

MakatiMed continues to be the first in offering advanced and current technology to its patients, proving that in this hospital, life—and how we live it—truly matters.
