Frozen yogurt–cups of cold comfort in this tropical heat

AT GOLDEN Spoon, the range of flavored frozen yogurt includes mint chocolate and peanut butter.

A nice way to cool off in this balmy weather is by indulging in frozen yogurt. This cold treat is popular for its health benefits, and some brands like Golden Spoon and The White Hat have upped the ante with an “artisanal” approach to flavor combinations or ingredient pairing.

Late last year, Golden Spoon launched its weightless pricing, where customers get to fill their cups with their own choice of flavored frozen yogurt, sauces and toppings.

The 30-year-old brand is currently doing extensive retail branding. Aside from the new retail store concept, it is launching new flavors, updating the look of its stores, and coming up with a new logo.

“Weightless pricing is the ultimate in healthy dessert binging. If you can pile it in, it’s yours at no additional cost no matter the weight,” said general manager Rica Lopez-de Jesus.

One should note, however, that while some of the frozen yogurt flavors are low-fat or even non-fat, the calories still add up, especially if one uses a heavy hand when it comes to the toppings.

It’s best to choose fresh fruit, not one soaking in heavy syrup. Add a few chopped almonds and you have a snack that will sate your sweet tooth.

Over at The White Hat, its waffles topped with yogurt are winning fans for the combination of textures and flavors. The chain’s naturally raised sourdough ensures a crisp and chewy mouth feel.

Depending on your preference, the freshly made waffles can be topped with cinnamon-spiced roasted apples, whipped cream and frozen yogurt; peanut butter, sliced banana and yogurt swirls; or strawberries, almond and yogurt.

Other variants include peaches and blueberry compote; fresh mango, kiwi and strawberry; chocolate spread and sliced mango; and cheese and herbs.

Whether it’s a snack or something heavier, frozen yogurt is a welcome respite from this tropical weather.
