Father’s Day more special this year for my hubby

BEHIND the scenes of Magnolia All-Purpose Cream TVC

To all the Superman dads out there, Happy Father’s Day! You may not be a Man of Steel, but you are the perfect superhero in the eyes of your children.

This year, Father’s Day is extra-special for my hubby Dennis. Aside from being a wonderful dad and a hardworking husband, he is now a commercial model!

Launched this weekend on all major TV networks and cinemas is his first-ever TV commercial, for Magnolia All-Purpose Cream. Of course, the real star of the TVC is moi, but he gets to play a bit part, just like in real life.

Magnolia has brought back its premium, all-purpose cream with a brand-new campaign—100 percent Creamy, 100 percent Delightful, All-Out Love, All-Out Goodness!

The relaunch is courtesy of San Miguel Purefoods Company, which has done a spectacular job of making Magnolia the brand of choice in many households—from chicken to milk, and now, even a cream that is the perfect cooking partner to bring out the delicious flavors of favorite dishes, from soups and salads to savory dishes and desserts.

Zero trans fat

Magnolia All-Purpose Cream has zero trans-fat and no sugar added. The new Magnolia formulation whips up so many dishes in the easiest way possible. The classic, of course, is the favorite of many Pinoy households: the fruit salad.

Our family was first contacted by Elmer Villasanta, Magnolia product manager, and his boss, category GM Reginald Baylosis. Over a sumptuous dinner, they offered to have me, Dennis, our daughter Annika and nephew Daniel Laurel as endorsers for the brand relaunch.

Annika and I had already previously worked on a TVC for Unilever’s Breeze, so we were happy to sign up. Dennis just had to make sure the shoot was on a weekend so as not to interfere with work.

Our director, Jun Reyes, and his production team were all a delight to work with and the shoot went smoothly.

It’s truly amazing how digital graphics can alter anything on film. We all loved the tech that goes on behind the scenes, which made the shrimps bounce scrumptiously into the pasta with cream.

Prepaid movie tickets

On a grander scale, it made Superman crash harmlessly into several buildings in the digital Metropolis.

Indeed, our family enjoyed watching the latest Superman movie, “Man of Steel,” at the SM Aura IMAX Theater, thanks to the IMAX Card launched by Smart Infinity. I was blown away with the incredible effects, but the value that will sweep cardholders off their feet is that we got to watch the movie for free.

Yup, subscribers of Smart Infinity, the premium mobile brand of Smart Communications, can now enjoy the exclusive privilege of accessing the world’s most immersive cinema.

Co-branded with SM Cinema IMAX, the Smart Infinity My IMAX card is a reloadable card powered by SM Cinema’s e-PLUS Tap To Pay system. The system allows the user to load the card to prepay for movie tickets at all SM IMAX theaters, avoiding long lines when entering the cinemas.

This great card provides an entrance to first-class entertainment that Smart Infinity subscribers can enjoy. Card users also get a set of popcorn and drink every time they reload their cards at the ticket booth.

Other perks include e-PLUS points that can be exchanged for premium items and other privileges.

Julie Carceller, department head of Smart Infinity, and her team are continually looking for ways to enrich the experience of all Smart subscribers, not only by providing them with the most reliable mobile service, but also by turning the activities that they engage in into something extraordinary.

Golf weekend

This weekend is also a golf weekend. Some are watching the US Open, but the more athletic dads are on the golf course.

There may even be a few at the Alabang Country Club, where the 5th Grey Goose Invitational was recently held.

The invitational was composed of 30 teams vying for pole position. Celebrity golfers and new dads like Ogie Alcasid, Epy Quizon and Ira Cruz took part in the fun tournament.

Sanjit Randhawa, Grey Goose country manager, urged the golfers to do their best, just like Grey Goose Vodka, itself one of the top luxury icons in the world. Bobby Campos, Bacardi Martini commercial manager, echoed his thoughts, noting that Grey Goose fires up the competitive spirit for the sport.

The best part of any golf tournament is always the awarding, and this is especially true when Grey Goose is involved, and more so when the ceremonies are held at the Jaguar/Land Rover showroom at The Fort. Event partners included Thai Airways, Jaguar/Land Rover, Raffles & Fairmont Makati, Club Car, U-Boat, Super Sunglasses, The Suriya Spa, Tumi Luggage and Braun Shavers. This year’s official media partner was Metro Society Magazine.

Power Plant Mall promo

COOL athletic dads Albert Altura, Tyrone Regaliza, David Almendral, Dennis Valdes, Nick Thomas, Mark Ellis and Dan Brown

Like many doing their shopping for the dads in their lives, I’m doing mine at the Power Plant Mall. It has an ongoing promo for Father’s Day—a raffle based on purchases at the extensive fashion shops in the mall.

Prizes include an iPad Mini and a Samsung S4. And if I just want to hang, I can always enjoy the car displays of Jeep and Mini or listen to the Philippine Youth Symphonic Band, which plays at the Concourse.

Dads come in all sorts of shapes and sizes and engage in different businesses. Luigi Nuñez, president of Beer Below Zero, has been the pioneering force behind the ice-cold beer phenomenon but he really enjoys being with his daughter Andie more than talking about beer.

My bike coach, Andy Leuterio, would rather spend time biking with his son Maximus than train with the rest of the triathletes. I guess the minute husbands become daddies, they refocus their lives and priorities.

And to those dads looking to do a bit of swim, bike or run this month, head to the BPI Philippines Swim Bike Run Expo 2013 on June 28-30 at Hall 4 of SMX Convention Center, Mall of Asia Complex, Pasay. There are great deals on the latest tri-gear, and top coaches will be there to give tips to athletes.
