Five-star-impeccable as always

Should one crave for a truly good steak, a visit to this five-star outlet must be made. We did, and got fully satisfied. After all, it’s the Tivoli at the Mandarin Oriental Manila in Makati City.

The place has never changed through the years—its elegance and the exquisite food it offers.

Dining area: The black and white interiors have remained imposing. A beautifully set starter buffet is at the center; a small private dining area has wines and liquors in the attached wall cabinets. On the left side is another private room. Tables are arranged with enough room for guests to move and with enough distance from each other, such that conversation hardly filters down.

Service: Very efficient. A tall young lady is at the door, welcoming diners with a gracious greeting.

Staff: Unobtrusive but attentive. They help select choices from the menu, talking almost in whispers but still audible.

Suggested orders: Steak was the order of the day. We were first led to the starter buffet for appetizers, which was quite a selection. This diner opted for Fresh Tuna and Salmon Sushi, while our companion chose the European sausages and a couple of Roasted Vegetable Salads. Caesar Salad can be ordered and whipped up from the kitchen.

Our main course was Ribeye Steak with its traditional Yorkshire Pudding, plus a patty of vegetables. This was served with a mayo-like herb dressing, but the meat did not need enhancement. Pure and freshly grilled, it was perfect, the meat juicy and tender.

Dessert was a production in itself—a bar of cake topped with slices of bananas, plus a small ball each of ice cream and fresh cream. Strong coffee punctuated the dream meal.

Government and service charges are added to the bill. Senior cards are honored.
