Filipino music inspires exhibit of interior design school

Kundiman, opera, tribal, zarzuela, novelty, Pinoy pop—the richness of Filipino music is the theme of the graduation exhibit of the Philippine School of Interior Design (PSID) Advanced Class of 2013.

“OPM: Obra Para sa Musika” marks the 46th anniversary of PSID, co-presented by Glorietta mall and the Filipino Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (Filscap).

It aims to marry design and music by translating popular Filipino songs into aesthetically and functionally designed interior spaces.

The students are challenged to embody the tone and mood of the song and Filipino music assigned them and incorporate these into livable interior spaces.

They are doing research not only on basic design principles and ergonomics, but also on the background and story of each song—the characters, melodies, lyrics, composers, artists and music genre.

It is hoped that the exhibit audience will have a renewed sense of appreciation of the beauty and musical heritage of the Philippines, as translated into design.

Set October 1 to 31 at L/3, Glorietta 3, Ayala Center, Makati City, the exhibit will have over 20 designed spaces inspired by OPM.

The exhibit’s Facebook page is at https://www.facebook.com/psid.opm or follow @psid_opm on Twitter.
