5 must-try looks from New York Fashion Week

MONIQUE Lhuillier

From what I’ve seen, I think New York Fashion Week’s Spring 2014 beauty looks are my favorite; in my opinion, they’re the most wearable.

I believe this is a time to celebrate, for women are finally letting go of the overly made-up hair and looks, and instead, showcasing natural beauty. This season is all about celebrating, not having to cover up!

Slick, wet look hair

This look has been predominant on the runway. It looks chic and glamorous, and is easy to pull off. What I love most about this is that it can easily go from day to night, and you can do it at home—there is no need to go to the salon and sit there for hours. It also keeps you away from the blow drier that will eventually dry and harm your hair. All you need is a comb, some hair product and a ponytail. I like it because it looks fresh and brings focus to the face.

I find sexy waves passé. This season, clean is in, but really, if you think about it, when wasn’t it?

Luminous skin

Truth is, no matter how good you are in putting on makeup, nothing beats beautiful skin. Luminous skin is, of course, achieved in a lot of ways.

The most basic way is through good skincare and hydration.

Illuminators, moisturizers and other facial care products include ingredients such as vitamin C that gradually erase discolorations caused by aging and UV rays.

When a woman is 35 or older, age lasers and some power peels would help, but for a quicker solution, a good foundation wouldn’t hurt.

Application is key. I suggest you always ask the girls at the counter to demonstrate how to apply the product, so you get its maximum benefits.

The fun bun

I find this look very French, but best of all, forgivingly beautiful. This look will keep that bad hair at bay, and also, like the sleek look, is easy to do, and can go from day to night. To those who have naturally wavy hair, well, lucky you! It will take less than five minutes to pull this off.

The secret is to twist the end of your ponytail into a bun and use a bobby pin to keep it in place. Make sure to use the right product, because there is a science to making the hair looking effortlessly unkept without looking like you just rolled out of bed.

Make your lips pop

No need to get lip implants to make your lips look full; all you really need is a great shade that will draw attention to it. I think this is the safest and most natural way to add volume and that pout, without the ouch! Besides, those fillers eventually disappear, and the change in your looks is quite baffling to others. I’ve seen friends with beautifully filled lips one month and overly full lips the next.

Less is more

A lot of women don’t know how to put their own makeup, but the secret to primping like an expert is groomed eyebrows—no stray hair and nicely shaped.

CREATURES of the wind

Some prefer to pluck their own brows; I myself prefer to have it threaded by an expert first, then I just pluck stray hair that grows afterwards.

I always remind the girl not to remove hair from the top but only from the bottom, because as we age, skin sags and brows tend to droop.

Also, having the brows lightened would be a good way to brighten the face. Most salons offer this service, but you may buy Jolen bleach,  available in Landmark. Properly taking care of your brows will also mean using products that will keep it streamlined and also fill in the gaps.
