MANILA, Philippines—US Ambassador to the Philippines Harry Thomas Jr. joined the Filipinos in congratulating Megan Young for winning the Miss World 2013 title.

“Congrats Miss World 2013!” said Thomas on Twitter Sunday, a day after the American-Filipino beauty clinched the coveted title in a glittering finale on Bali Island in Indonesia.

Young, 23, was born in Alexandria, Virginia to an American father and a Filipino mother. She was 10 years old when she moved to Olongapo City in Zambales.

She is the first Filipina to win the Miss World title since the London-based beauty pageant began in 1951.

Incidentally, Thomas is engaged to Filipino corporate executive Mithi Aquino.
