How to get bigger eyes without surgery

EYELID tape

Among the options women with monolids (or chinita eyes) have—aside from applying eye makeup, volumizing mascara, lash extensions or false eyelashes to make their eyes look bigger—is to undergo blepharoplasty (or eye lift), a popular surgical procedure in the Philippines to create double eyelids.

But a nonsurgical alternative popular in Korea and Japan is the use of eyelid tape or, sometimes, even small strips of adhesive tape, to create the double eyelid look. These are normally crescent-shaped pieces of tape.

The disadvantage is, it tends to be more obvious and the stickiness of the tape wears off as the day progresses.

At a press launch a few weeks ago, I encountered unusual beauty products from the Japanese brand K-Palette. Those who have monolids can create the look with its newest products, Mega Cute Double Eyelid Glue and Tape.

The product comes in two formulas—the glue type (pink), recommended for beginners, and the tape type (orange), for a more defined look. Both formulas are safe for the eyes and contain moisturizing ingredients like peony extract, rosemary essence, hyaluronic acid and chamomile extract.

How to use

Though my eyes are naturally deep-set, I decided to give them a try. First, you should have a clean, non-oily surface to work with. If you use eye cream, wait a few minutes to ensure that the area is completely dry before applying the double eyelid adhesive.

Using the Y-shaped pusher that comes with the product, mark the crease where you want to create your double eyelid and apply the line of glue or tape on the desired area. Keep your eyes closed for at least 30 seconds while waiting for the glue to become transparent, then push the crease in very lightly (careful not to poke your eye) with the pusher to keep your double eyelid in place.

You can apply eye makeup after to enhance the look (powder, not cream, formulas work best with the tape and glue). This should last throughout the day, until you wash off the adhesive with cleanser or makeup remover.

In my case, since I already have natural double eyelids, applying the glue somehow added a little more definition to my eyes. This is something I won’t consider for everyday, though, but only for more special occasions.

K-Palette is available at all Beauty Bar outlets.
