Mixing Old World charm and modern lines is the trend these days. But whether it’s for fashion or for your home, combining the two styles can be tricky. Where one may be intricate and delicate in detail, the other can be more streamlined and bold.
A paper doily used as napkin holder can start you off on this attractive look for your setting. This may be the simplest idea for an Old World touch, needing only the following:
Paper doily (available at big supermarkets); for regular-size dinner napkins, a medium-size doily will suffice
Scotch tape or back-to-back tape
Cloth dinner napkin
Fold your napkin in half, then into a square. From there, fold lengthwise to a two-inch width.
Place the doily in the middle, then secure in the back neatly with a piece of tape.
Tip: Paper doilies usually come in plain white, gold or silver. The intricate cutwork will stand out against a darker background, such as the one in the photo.
