1998: Year that the Animal Welfare Act or Republic Act No. 8485 was signed into law.

P10,000: Fine imposed on pet owners who refuse to have their dog put under observation after it has bitten a person, per Republic Act No. 9482 or the “Anti-Rabies Act of 2007.”

P75: Registration fee for pets in Marikina City.  Facilitated by the City Veterinary Office, Marikina City holds a city-wide pet registration every year, which aims to promote responsible pet ownership and maintain a rabies-free city

5.5: Area in hectares of the Manila Zoo.

600: Estimated number of species of birds, mammals, reptiles, fishes and invertebrates at the Avilon Zoo in Rodriguez, Rizal.

P1,000: Adoption fee for dogs under the care of the Philippine Animal Welfare Society (PAWS), an organization that rehabilitates animals and finds them new homes.  The adoption fee for cats is P500.

2002: Year that CARA (Compassion and Responsibility for Animals) Welfare Philippines was formed.  CARA is a non-profit, non-government organization that promotes compassion for animals and responsible pet ownership, among others.

3: Number of classifications of dog vaccines according to the American Animal Hospital Association – core (universally recommended), non-core (optional) and not recommended.  Among the core vaccines are Canine Parvovirus, Canine Distemper, Canine Adenovirus 2/Canine Infectious Hepatitis and Rabies.

420,000: Estimated number of kittens that can be produced by a female cat and her offspring in seven years, according to data by the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals.

$12 million: Amount inherited by the Maltese dog Trouble from her late owner, the billionaire real estate and hotel tycoon Leona Helmsley in 2007.  In 2008, a US court decision cut Trouble’s inheritance to $2 million.  The dog died at the age of 12 in 2010.
