We call her President Nadine Lustre because she’s been a great inspiration to many. She has been using her platform responsibly and taking back her narrative with her no-nonsense clapbacks to body shamers and insensitive media personalities, posts on her political stances, and various environmental advocacies.
On April 15, Bea Alonzo dropped another exciting vlog and this time Lustre joined her for a lie detector test. The ever so honest Lustre’s answers reminded us that she’s also called president because she’s not just fierce but very relatable. Here’s a list of our favorites from the truths she spilled on the vlog.
Being scared of pregnancy and wanting to adopt
Alonzo brought up a statement in 2022 where Lustre said that she doesn’t want to have kids and asked if this was still the case. “First of all, takot akong manganak. ’Yun talaga ’yung pinaka-reason kung bakit ayokong magkaroon ng kids ng sarili. Takot akong mabuntis, takot akong manganak,” Lustre answered. “But then, andami kasing kids na walang parents. Right now, parang my mind is set on adopting [rather] than having kids.” She’s giving scared-of-pregnancy showbiz millennial representation.
People striking a conversation with her while she has headphones on is her pet peeve
Nariring ba kita? Kapag naka-headphones, wag niyo kausapin. Kalabitin niyo.” Amen to that.
Being discriminated at go-sees and auditions because of her skin color
Lustre shared how she experienced being discriminated against as an aspiring young morena actress and took glutathione before. She recounted, “Isa sa mga naging insecurities ko back then, kasi hindi lang siya once nangyari, ’yung kapag VTRs—pipila kang antagal-tagal tapos pagdating doon papapilahin kayo. Tapos mapapauwi ako kasi sasabihin, ‘Mestiza po hinahanap namin.’”
But now, Lustre celebrates the skin she lives in. “Tsaka ngayon, hindi na ako takot na umitim. Morena naman talaga ako, pero ’yung kapag nasa Siargao ako, hindi ako ’yung nagco-cover, nagpa-payong,” she added. And her love for her own skin also showed in her recent GRWM vlog on her own channel where she shared her everyday makeup routine.
Facing depression, having an identity crisis, and being financially irresponsible at the height of the JaDine loveteam
Being in one of the most bankable love teams took a toll on Lustre but her hardships will also be relatable for anyone with a public persona and newfound fame. “May time na sobrang na-depress ako because of how my life was like. Work lang, walang rest. It really messed up my mental health. Nagkaroon ako ng identity crisis that time kasi hindi ko na kilala ’yung sarili ko. I was trying to be someone who I wasn’t. I was such a people pleaser back then pero ngayon parang kung ayaw mo edi ’wag. ’Yung nangyari sakin, ’yun kasi palagi ’yung mga role ko. Kapag nagto-tour ako, ang tawag na sakin ng mga tao ay yung pangalan ng character ko.”
Asked if she resented people not being able to separate her from her character, she said, “At some point I did. Nawala ako sa sauce talaga. Hindi ko na kilala kung sino si Nadine, di ko na alam kung ano ’yung gusto ko.” She’d rather have people love her for who she is rather than her character.
Lustre revealed that at one point, fame and money got to her head. “’Yung time na sobrang booming ’yung love team, doon ko parang na-feel na hindi nauubos yung pera so I was spending on so much stuff. Eventually narealize ko na I have to start saving.”
Not understanding the need to be pitted against KathNiel and LizQuen
Lustre admitted that she didn’t like how JaDine was being pitted against KathNiel and LizQuen. “I didn’t like that there was a competing aspect to it. Parang sa akin back then, hindi ko nage-gets bakit may ganun so I was more of just doing what I have to do. Nafe-feel ko lang talaga na pinagco-compete kami ng mga tao pero hindi ko siya inisip,” she said. Exactly. Instead of comparing to see who’s better, let’s celebrate the joint slay from the top three queens of the younger millennial teleserye generation.
“Parang I was really just doing my own thing. Hindi ko rin gets bakit kailangan may competition. Even until now, nakikita ko siya sa ibang loveteams [ngayon],” she added.
Having a boss (well, director) that made her cry and regretting some of the projects she’s done
Ever cried at work because of a mean boss? Lustre has, too. “Hindi ako makaiyak sa eksena. Tapos parang sabi niya, ‘Ano? You want this? Hindi mo naman kaya eh.’ Ginaganun ako. Tapos umiyak ako. ’Nung umiyak ako, nag-sorry siya sakin after. ‘Pinapaiyak lang kita.’ ’Yun ’yung naging motivation ko.”
And even Lustre has some career regrets. While she didn’t drop the names of the roles and songs she regrets working on, she did confirm that she does have those. Any guesses?
Believing in soulmates and learning curse words from a boyfriend who speaks a different language
Like a true romantic, Lustre does believe in soulmates. Well, soul groups to be exact. “I do believe na marami kasi tayong soulmates,” she says. “Parang you’re all attracted to each other na.”
And part of Lustre’s soul group is French boyfriend Christopher Bariou, probably. Lustre shared that while Bariou teaches her to speak French sometimes, she has mostly learned curse words.
Forgiving but struggling to forget past hurts
Lustre, who’s never been dumped btw, forgives easily but she struggles to forget past hurts. “Kapag ako kunwari may friend ako na nag-betray sakin, nahu-hurt talaga ako kasi ’yung treatment ko sa tao parang binigay ko lahat sayo, family,” she said. “[Pero] bibitawan ko na lang. Ayokong nagke-keep ng anger. Doing it for my own sake. Fino-forgive ko na lang pero it’s not going to be the same.”
