Two of Japan’s biggest names—Shu Uemura and Takashi Murakami—have teamed up to create a kawaii makeup collection for the holidays. Princess by Takashi Murakami for Shu Uemura features a Japanese take on naughty and nice, with Murakami’s princesses in black and pink.
Takashi Murakami is one of Japan’s most beloved and prolific contemporary artists. His works have been exhibited all over the world, and he has had collaborations with other luxury brands such as Louis Vuitton and Issey Miyake. His sculptures have sold at Christie’s and Sotheby’s for as much as $13.5 million.
His collection for Shu Uemura is divided according to looks based on Murakami’s two princesses—a color palette of soft pinks and shimmery golds for the sweet princess, and darker hues of purple and carbon for the naughty princess. The princesses are inspired by Japan’s popular animé and cosplay subculture.
A new limited-edition lip and cheek cream also debuted in five flattering shades. The creamy texture dries down to a satiny long-lasting matte finish, and is pigmented enough that only a
pin-size amount is enough to create a long-wearing natural flush.
Regular Shu Uemura skincare products like the Anti/Ox cleansing oil and UV under base mousse were also outfitted with specially designed art by Murakami.
Murakami fans will want to collect the mini brush sets with Murakami-print pouches, as well as the S curler which comes with a dangling Murakami charm featuring his most ubiquitous design, the smiling sunflower. A makeup box is also available in very limited quantities.
