Scent and light

VOTIVE candle in water with herbs and lemon

As we approach the month of December, the weather gets cooler, the air seems crisper and we’re geared toward entertaining more for the holiday season.

We deck out our homes with Christmas decor and prepare our most scrumptious dishes. What better way to welcome all  your guests than with the scent of fresh herbs wafting through your home by way of this fragrant votive candle idea from our friend Florinda Falcasantos Gloss from Chicago?

For one votive candle, you will need:

  • One tea light candle
  • Fresh herb cuttings—you may use just one kind or several, such as rosemary, mint, oregano
  • Thinly but evenly sliced lemons
  • Wide-mouthed mason jar or any clear vase
  • Water

Procedures:

JUST A few kitchen staples are needed to create this single decor.

1.      Fill your jar or vase to 1/3 full

2.      Place your herb cuttings on the water.

3.      Carefully “float”  lemon slices on the water.

4.      Place the tea light candle on top of the lemon slices, making sure it is balanced enough not to topple over.

5.      The heat of the candle will warm the lemon and herbs, and set off all the natural fragrances.

Tip: if you are using a mason jar or a tall vase, you may want to tie a piece of raffia or ribbon around the jar’s neck for a pretty touch.
