Delluba’s ‘Maldita’ opens at Podium

“SKATER Boy”
“ROCKIN’ Roller”

Pakil, Laguna-based artist Jomar Delluba investigates the creativity of children for mischief in his first solo exhibition, “Maldita,” which will open at Galerie Joaquin Podium on Jan. 16 at 6:30 p.m. and run until Jan. 27.

Delluba’s practice is one of excruciating detailing within a highly-developed technique. He took up drafting technology in college and apprenticed under renowned surrealist Jerry Morada. Delluba has since gained numerous recognitions, such as Juror’s Choice at the GSIS Painting Competition.

He paints in a style that, at first glance, is cutesy, but becomes increasingly surreal upon closer examination. A painting of a girl in pigtails shows her hand over her right eye as if she was punched. What is surreal, however, is the disinterested look on her face—as if she was already used to such physical punishment.

This is the sort of nuanced discourse that Jomar Delluba brings to the table. Conceptually sound and technically superb, his works make him an exciting artist to watch out for.
