Education conference set at the College of the Holy Spirit

Alumnae of the College of the Holy Spirit (CHS) who have distinguished themselves in the field of education will be the speakers in a conference on “The Evolution of Philippine Education: Current Thrusts and Directions” on Jan. 30, 8 a.m.-6 p.m., at the Paraclete Auditorium of CHS on Mendiola, Manila.

 

Cristina Evangelista-Torres will open the conference. She is a retired social science professor of the University of the Philippines Manila, where she also served as department chair and associate dean for academic affairs.  She is also the regional coordinator of the Forum for Ethical Review Committees in Asia and the Western Pacific, a training and advocacy group set up by the World Health Organization Special Programme for Diseases of Poverty.

 

Among the other speakers are: Elizabeth M. King (globalization and Philippine education), vice president for human development and director of education of the World Bank; Victoria Cajipe (globalization and borderless classrooms), a former research scientist with the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique in France, and founder and director of CHS’ “Classroom Without Walls” project; Cynthia Rose Banzon-Bautista (reforming Philippine education: K-to-12 to Asean harmonization), a sociologist at the University of the Philippines, a commissioner at the Commission on Higher Education, member of the board of trustees of the Ramon Magsaysay Award Foundation, and chair of the Unesco Commission on Social Sciences and the Humanities; Bernardita Reyes-Churchill, a former professor of history and chair of the UP history department, and currently serving as president of the Philippine National Historical Society and chair of the technical committee for history of CHEd; Edna Zapanta-Manlapaz (Philippine literature in English), former chair of the English department at Ateneo de Manila University and co-founder of its Center of Language Teaching and its Library of Women’s Writings; and Angelina Pineda-Galang (applied science and the environment), a part-time faculty member of Miriam College and executive director of the Environmental Studies Institute, and president of the Environmental Education Network of the Philippines (1996-2003).
