Chucho Martinez lives and breathes golf–as player, teacher, club manager, and now entrepreneur

Chucho Martinez lives and breathes golf, having played the sport for the past 27 years. He’s seen action in the junior, amateur and professional tournament series.

He has also taught the game to kids and adults, aside from having managed a golf club. Lately, he has become the distributor of TaylorMade-Adidas golf clubs, bags and accessories.

“As a club manager, I used to organize tournaments, look for sponsors and coordinate with brands. Now I’m learning what it is to be on the other side—being the sponsor and marketing a brand. I’m enjoying everything about it,” he says.

He credits his youthful vibe and appearance to a “no red meat” diet, and never fails to spend quality time with his two kids and wife Mika.

We asked Chucho to talk more about his new venture, and his choice of personal grooming products.

Learning

Being an entrepreneur… allows me to manage my own time. Distributing a golf brand is something that I’ve always wanted to explore. I like that I’m learning something, and that it’s related to what I enjoy (doing).

The star products of the brands are… For TaylorMade, it’s the golf clubs. Our brand endorsers Derek Ramsay and John Estrada give me random calls during the week, saying that using our irons make their golf balls fly further. The brand is currently No. 1 in the world, so I’m happy to see that it’s well-received in Manila. For Adidas, it’s the apparel. ClimaCool technology provides maximum moisture management and breathability. It maintains body heat without adding bulk or restricting the swing.

In my golf bag right now are… The TaylorMade SLDR woods and Speedblade irons.

RL WORLD of Polo- Polo Classic

My staple golf clothing are… ClimaCool Adidas golf shirts, jeans and driving shoes.

When it comes to my diet… I eat mostly fish, chicken and lots of vegetables. No beef or pork, and I stay away from carbs.

On my bathroom counter you’ll find… Cetaphil body moisturizer, Cetaphil facial wash, Shiseido Men Skin empowering cream, Durance shaving oil, Canus Lait de Chevre body soap, Tresemme Shampoo, Polo cologne blue and green (which I’ve used since my teens), and Bulgari perfume.

My morning rituals involve… Putting Belo Sun Expert Sunblock before golf, drinking Ultragen from Nutropia after I play or exercise, and taking spirulina and turmeric in the mornings.

A bath product my family has trusted over the years is… Dove soap.

Top tip

To have a skincare game plan like Chucho, follow these tips to keep your skin as youthful as your body.

Wash your face in the morning and evening. Dirt and oil accumulate on your face throughout the day. Washing it helps retain the skin’s moisture while removing dirt and grime.  Oil and dirt on your face make it hard to have a smooth shave.

Moisturize. Although men’s skin is often thicker and coarser than women’s, moisturizing is still an important part of a guy’s daily routine. The sun, the elements, free radicals and pollution don’t discriminate. They affect everyone of all skin types, causing dryness and damage.

Use a deodorant. Sweat itself is not what produces body odor. The bad smell comes from bacteria that break down one of two types of sweat on your skin. Deodorant contains some antibacterial power to stop the smell before it breaks out, while antiperspirants deal with sweat directly. These days it’s easy to find a deodorant, but hard to have one that won’t leave white or yellow stains in your clothes.

Thanks to Nivea, this is a thing of the past. Nivea Deodorant Invisible for Black & White uses technology that allows stains to be removed easier from the fabric upon washing.

Nivea Men Deodorant Invisible for Black & White Power Spray 150 ml, P170; Nivea Men Deodorant Invisible for Black & White Power Roll-on 25ml, 50ml, P50 and P89, respectively. Available in stores nationwide.
