Nude explorations to open Art Underground

“INKED”

The phenomenon  of “Pareidolia” (parr-i-DOH-lee-ah)—a way for us to find order in what can be a chaotic and meaningless world—is the title of Eufemio Rasco IV’s newest art exhibit, which will be the inaugural show of  Art Underground in Mandaluyong City on April 5.

Known mainly for his nudes, Rasco’s works have lately figured well in international auctions such as those by Sotheby’s, Borobudur and Larasati.

Rasco went to the University of the Philippines College of Fine Arts to major in Studio Arts (Painting) before moving on to Philippine Women’s University Institute of Fine Arts and Design, also to study Painting.  “Pareidolia” features new works that demonstrate the artist’s development not only as a nude figure, but as a painter of memory, fantasy, and the nuances in between. His works articulate a keen understanding of the anatomical requirements of nudes. Never satisfied with mere technique, he elevates the figure to the point of almost religious relevance, with the symbolic addition of a rose adorning the figure’s head, as well as a rosary tattooed on her wrist.

The painting thus becomes a contemporary reading of a religious iconography.

“PHOTOTAXIS”

“Phototaxis”  mythologizes the female figure, with the addition of giant months that lend a decidedly surreal atmosphere to the work. This painting is a forceful revelation of the skill of the artist, who uses a difficult hyperrealist technique to bring the audience into his world.

Art Underground is a platform for contemporary visual art praxis. Art projects link with other creative multi-disciplines and movements such as literature, performance, film, design, fashion, architecture, heritage conservation and music.

“Pareidolia” will formally open on April 5, 6 p.m., in Art Underground at 814 Balagtas St. and Shaw Blvd., Addition Hills, Mandaluyong City. It will run until April 19. Call 0908-3128881 / 0942-8048884.
