HBO Asia’s “Game of Thrones” viewing party last Monday night was so much fun that we couldn’t wait to throw a GoT party ourselves. The hall at the Commissary in Whitespace was converted into a den any George R.R. Martin character would feel at home in—except maybe Tyrion, ’cause there weren’t any naked chicks around.
We took a scene out of HBO Asia’s GoT playbook to share tips on how you, too, can throw a viewing party so wicked Khaleesi will want to crash it.
Create a banquet hall
Cut up rectangular strips of cloth in your favorite House colors and use it as table runners. Ditch the overhead lighting in favor of tall candles to set the mood for backstabbing (meat) and (sweet) debauchery. Look for metallic dinnerware to give your dining table a medieval feel.
Come in costume
Dragons are easy to come by (the toy versions at least). Look for makeup tutorials online to transform your face to look like Daenerys’ (we love Michelle Phan’s Khaleesi tutorial), or drape a roomy cardigan over a black shirt to dress up like Varys (add a pillow to your frame if you’re skinny).
Put up a photo wall
No party would be complete without a photo wall for you to use for your Instagram uploads. Add some props like swords, shields and House banners for authenticity.
Your GoT menu
We loved the GoT inspired dishes served at the viewing party, like the Pentoshi Pasta (rigatoni with creamed bolognese and parmesan slivers), Westerosi bread and salt (the easiest one to make, all you need is the menu card, really), and the Baratheon Roast (carving station with slow roasted beef belly served with rosemary mustard glaze or red wine au jus and sides of potato gratin and roasted baby carrots). You can also add Winterfell wine coolers or cans of “Lannister Lite.”
