Drawings at Stephanie

“LANDSCAPE,” I by Federico Aguilar Alcuaz

Drawing on paper is the focus of the new exhibit of Galerie Stephanie in Libis, “Fundamentals: Drawings from Modernist and Contemporary Masters,” which opens on April 25 at Galerie Stephanie.

The drawings will come in a variety of media—ink, acrylic, graphite and charcoal.

Artists whose paper works are featured are Presidential Medal of Merit Awardee Juvenal Sanso, National Artists BenCab and Federico Aguilar Alcuaz, and contemporary artists such as Ronald Ventura and Andres Barrioquinto.

Other Modernists are Angelito Antonio, Raul Lebajo, and Mauro “Malang”  Santos, along with contemporary artists Rom Villaseran, Francis Nacion, Vincent de Pio, Aileen Lanuza, Carlo Ongchangco.

Sanso’s paper works feature landscapes, especially his Brittany series. Aguilar Alcuaz’s are portraits that recall his larger oil canvases.

Villaseran uses the fantasy landscapes of novels such as “The Lord of the Rings” to create epic and sweeping drawings of visionary proportions. De Pio uses the culture of Japan and combines it with pop culture tropes to create thought-provoking interludes.

The works of Ventura and Barrioquinto demonstrate their art practice and show why their works have become the most sought-after in auctions abroad.  Nacion and Ongchangco have also attracted much attention for their unique works.

The raison d’être of the exhibit is to underscore the importance of drawing to artistic production and to highlight its unique qualities. Ultimately, drawing bears the very core of an artist.
