Marikina shoemaker steps up, offers younger shoe line for fashionistas

Ohrelle is a fashion survivor. It is a Filipino shoe brand that has managed to keep afloat amid cheaper China-made imports and luxury brands.

Shoe lover Linda Salonga-Pastoral established Ohrelle in the 1970s and made it the go-to brand of women who like classic styles that are affordably priced. Ohrelle, she said, also carries the made-in-Marikina stamp—an assurance of durability and comfort.

Linda used to travel to Europe to research on trends and styles. She now works with daughter-in-law Barbie Pastoral, Ohrelle’s marketing manager, to keep herself updated.

Barbie said popular styles are wedges, pumps and sandals in basic colors. All of these come with leather-lined footbeds for extra softness. Aside from basics, new styles now come in colorful combinations which we saw on Inquirer Lifestyle columnist Tessa Prieto-Valdes, who is known for her over-the-top fashion.

Tapping the fashionista

Ohrelle competes with newer brands by launching on-trend shoes under the Jolie line, aimed at young fashionistas.

Jolie is Ohrelle’s younger line endorsed by celebrity Frencheska Farr who represents the Jolie girls’ knack for chic and casual fashion.

Jolie’s summer collection features florals, nautical prints and brights and come in snakeskin, patent and rope material to perk up a simple outfit.

There are flats, low-heeled sandals and thongs for summer strolls as well as espadrille wedges, platforms and chunky heels for dressier gigs.

“Girls look for comfortable shoes whether they’re worn at the mall, at a party, or on the beach,” Barbie said.

She suggested pairing styles with sundresses, bright tops with skinny jeans or shorts, with stacked accessories in contrasting colors.

Linda, the Ohrelle matriarch, is still on her toes when it comes to approving new styles. She consults with Barbie to keep Ohrelle a trusted brand for regular customers, and to attract new ones. Bags and accessories are also available at Ohrelle branches in SM North Edsa and Cash & Carry mall.

“It is a challenge to keep up with the times,” Linda said. “We are glad women trust the brand.” Barbie, meanwhile, makes sure to get the younger girls’ attention by presenting fresh styles. She also manages Ohrelle’s online store which offers free shipping nationwide.

Ohrelle boutiques are at G/F SM North Edsa; G/F Cash & Carry. It is available at the shoes section of Landmark Makati and Trinoma, Robinson’s Galleria, Robinson’s Place Manila; The Shoes Center, Greenhills and Ali Mall; Metro Gaisano in Market! Market!
