BORACAY ISLAND, Philippines—At least 1,600 people on this popular island resort simultaneously massaged the persons in front of them in an attempt to set a world record for the longest massage chain.

Forming five lines about a kilometer long along the coastline of White Beach on Station 2, the participants massaged the head, neck, shoulders and back for seven minutes starting at 9:30 a.m. on Friday.

The participants wore white shirt and black pants as they sat on the beach. They were masseurs, messues and volunteers, including the 150 policemen belonging to Boracay Tourists Action Center (BTAC).

According to Malay Mayor John Yap, Boracay surpassed the record set by Thailand where 1,223 participants joined the longest massage chain on April 28, 2010.

Thailand’s record was set by employees of Have A Good Dream Co. Ltd and Thai Beverage Marketing Co. Ltd in Bangkok, Thailand, according to the Guinness World Records website.

“We already break the record of Thailand in terms of the number of participants but we still have to submit the required documents and materials for final validation and confirmation of the Guinness,” he said.

Yap said it would take two to three months before the island would be declared as the new record holder in the Guinness Book of World Records.

He said the documents and materials needed to be submitted included a cover letter with details of the record attempt, video footage, high quality photographs, log books, expert measurements, surveyor reports and signed copies of the Agreement Regarding Record Attempt.

The event was organized by the Local Government of Aklan in partnership with the Remnant Institute, Department of Health, San Miguel Corporation, Petron and Aldritz Corporation.
